We already spend trillions on healthcare....$2.2 trillion in 2007, more than 16% of our GDP. $500 billion was spent on unnecessary medical care alone. Federal expenditures (Medicare and Medicaid) are growing at a rate of about 9.1% a year and private insurance expenditures are growing at a rate of 10% annually. We spend exponentially more per capita on healthcare than any industrialized nation in the world and our population's health outcome indicators are near the bottom of that group. Clearly, what we're doing isn't working nor is it fiscally sustainable over the long haul.
