WASHINGTON - Sen. Ted Stevens, the nation's longest-serving Republican senator and a major figure in Alaska politics since before statehood, was indicted Tuesday on seven felony counts of concealing more than a quarter of a million dollars in house renovations and gifts from a powerful oil contractor that lobbied him for government aid.

Jefferson has been the subject of an ongoing probe in which FBI agents allegedly found more than $90,000 in cash in his freezer. He was accused of bribery by accepting $100,000 from a telecommunications businessman. Two of his associates have been sentenced.

The 63-year-old Congressman, who has steadfastly maintained that he is not guilty, was stripped of his seat on the House Ways and Means Committee, but won re-election last year despite the looming investigation. He is serving his eighth term representing Louisiana's 2nd District.
