Iraq has its gulag of prisons, dungeons and torture chambers — some of them acknowledged, like Abu Ghraib, and as many more disguised as hotels, sports centers and other innocent-sounding places. It has its overlapping secret-police agencies, and its culture of betrayal, with family members denouncing each other, and offices and factories becoming hives of perfidy.

"Enemies of the state" are eliminated, and their spouses, adult children and even cousins are often tortured and killed along with them.

Mr. Hussein even uses Stalinist maxims, including what an Iraqi defector identified as one of the dictator's favorites: "If there is a person, then there is a problem. If there is no person, then there is no problem."

There are rituals to make the end as terrible as possible, not only for the victims but for those who survive. After seizing power in July 1979, Mr. Hussein handed weapons to surviving members of the ruling elite, then joined them in personally executing 22 comrades who had dared to oppose his ascent.

Casualties from Iraq's gulag are harder to estimate. Accounts collected by Western human rights groups from Iraqi émigrés and defectors have suggested that the number of those who have "disappeared" into the hands of the secret police, never to be heard from again, could be 200,000. As long as Mr. Hussein remains in power, figures like these will be uncheckable, but the huge toll is palpable nonetheless.

Hmmm...Considering we helped to put him on top of that country and helped train his military in an effort to defeat Iran, which the glorious President Regan had a hand in including Afghanistan and Bin Laden to help defeat the Russians......So what does that makes us? Stalin sympathisers?

In a very complex study of professors from Yale, Northwestern, Virginia, Alabama, and Columbia the presidents were rated on 3 criteria - Historical significance, Law, and Policy. Clinton ranked 20th in History, 27th in Law, and 28th in Policy. That is VERY consistent of any poll/study of scholars on our presidents. But Kaz you must be a fan of mediocrity and below - as that is clearly where Clinton was/is in the history of US presidents.

I am not debating the intellect of Bush vs Clinton. I never said Clinton was dumb. I did say that if you look at any scholarly ranking of US presidents - Clinton ranks somewhere between 20th and 28th. That is a far cry from your statement that he was "one of the best Presidents ever." We will see where Bush will rank after his term is over,as almost all history/law/political scholars agree that a president should be out of office for a full term before an accurate picture can be taken of what they did/did not accomplish. (although I can find numerous polls that don't have Bush anywhere close to last of the US presidents)

As far as the history statement goes - I can spell it out for those of you who are a little slow. If you look at a history book and compare President Bush to any other leader - evil would not be a word that comes to mind.
