U.S. Military Says Seized Docs Show Al Qaeda in Iraq Is Weakened

    Sunday, February 10, 2008

    AP

Feb. 8: A U.S. soldier with the 2nd Battalion, 319th Airborne Field, studies a map as he patrols the Azamiyah neighborhood in north Baghdad, Iraq.

BAGHDAD — A diary and another document seized during U.S. raids show some Al Qaeda in Iraq leaders fear the terror group is crumbling, with many fighters defecting to American-backed neighborhood groups, the U.S. military said Sunday.

The military revealed two documents discovered by American troops in November: a 39-page memo written by a mid- to high-level Al Qaeda official with knowledge of the group's operations in Iraq's western Anbar province, and a 16-page diary written by another group leader north of Baghdad.

In the Anbar document, the author describes an Al Qaeda in crisis, with citizens growing weary of militants' presence and foreign fighters too eager to participate in suicide missions rather than continuing to fight, said Rear Adm. Gregory Smith, a U.S. military spokesman.

"We lost cities and afterward, villages... We find ourselves in a wasteland desert," Smith quoted the document as saying.

The memo — believed to have been written in summer 2007 — cites militants' increasing difficulty in moving around and transporting weapons and suicide belts because of better equipped Iraqi police and more watchful citizens, Smith said.

The diary, seized by U.S. troops south of Balad, was written in autumn 2007 by Abu Tariq, who refers to himself as sector leader for al-Qaida in Iraq, Smith said. Tariq wrote that he was once in charge of 600 fighters, but only 20 were left "after the tribes changed course" — a reference to how many Sunni tribesmen have switched sides to fight alongside the Americans, Smith said.

The Sunni tribes' yearlong alliance with U.S. forces is credited with helping reduce violence across the country.

The new organizations, called awakening councils or neighborhood watch groups, were key to helping push Al Qaeda in Iraq out of Anbar province, once one of the country's most violent. The terror network's top leaders are now based somewhere in northern Iraq, Smith said, having moved out of Anbar and into Diyala province last year.

"The diary shows that Al Qaeda regards these volunteer citizen groups as a grave threat, and that terrorists are targeting them," Smith told reporters.

In recent months, attacks on the Sunni volunteers have spiked while overall violence has steadily declined, he said.

Underscoring continued violence between militants and U.S.-allied fighters, clashes erupted Sunday when insurgents stormed two villages in northwestern Iraq, local officials said. Sunni volunteers and Iraqi security forces repelled the attack, but at least 22 people were killed, according to a Sunni lawmaker who heads an anti-Al Qaeda group as well as an Iraqi Army officer.

The U.S. military described both of the insurgent documents Sunday, but allowed reporters to see just four pages of Tariq's diary, citing security reasons.

The documents tell "narrow but compelling stories of the challenges Al Qaeda in Iraq is facing," Smith told reporters in Baghdad's heavily guarded Green Zone. He stressed that the documents revealed the terror group's weakened operations and morale in only two areas, and that it did not mean Al Qaeda had been defeated.

"This does not signal the end of Al Qaeda in Iraq, but it is a contemporary account of the challenges posed to terrorists from the people of Iraq," Smith said.

He said the documents are believed to be authentic, Smith said, because they contain details that only Al Qaeda in Iraq leaders could know about battlefield movements and tactics.

Smith said the biggest blow to Al Qaeda, according to the documents, has been former Sunni fighters' new alliance with the Americans. At least 77,500 volunteers have partnered with U.S. and Iraqi troops countrywide, he said.

Some 15,000 of those are in Baghdad, and the most recent growth has been in awakening councils in Diyala province and the rest of northern Iraq, Smith added.

In Baghdad, one of the neighborhoods most improved with help from Sunni volunteers was Amariyah, on the city's west side. On Sunday, more than 1,000 people demonstrated in the predominantly Sunni area, protesting the recent arrests of 17 residents.

Shops were shuttered as the crowd pushed through Amariyah, chanting pro-Sunni and anti-American slogans. At one point, demonstrators unfurled a large Saddam Hussein-era Iraqi flag over the crowd.

Iraq's flag was altered recently, to eliminate three green stars thought to symbolize Saddam's ousted Baath Party.

not like we are cheering for them. Still want to see what happens. That is just one report. Now, the real threat is in Afganistan, where they have grown since we have been focusing on Iraq. Also, the report said they were. weakend in 2 areas around with a close proximity to the green zone. Which is the most heavly guarded area in Iraq. That's where all the defense contractors are. Also, we are talking about the sunnis. Which are the smallest sect left in Iraq-besides the Kurds, which have never been a problem. Of course, the sunnis are going to back the U.S. because they were apart of the ruling elite, and they want their power back. You see, most sunnis were thrown out of power during the debathification process, that got us into this mess in the first place. The Shia which are the majority there, and more extreme, now had power that it never had. Now, after we admitted we fucked up with the sunnia- the more moderate ones. We ask them for their help to fight the shia, good move, but about 4 years too late. They now have control of most of the country.

Since this doesn't fit the media's agenda, you won't hear much about this. According to Harry Ried "this war is lost".

I dont know what to make of these claims but I can tell you this and I am certain of it.

AlQuaida never existed in Iraq before this war started...that I am certain of....whatever is in Iraq might be funded by them after the war started as an insurgency but dont be duped into thinking AlQuaida was ever there to begin with.

My opinion. Info in all directions- who do you wish to believe- propaganda is a hugh part of this war for both Iraq and the US and allies.

My feel on this is that they are weakened. Their field commander was killed and the other leaders are feeling the heat. Suicide bombers are still easy prey for them. Promise them anything and do it for Allah and the 70 virgins.
Afganistan is more hilly and can hide many terrorists. It will take time there.
Pakistan/ Iraq border is in better shape but there are some dangerous areas to go into.
All in all President Bush has taken the war to them instead of waiting for the inevitable 911 once again. It is not hard to cross our borders and terrorist cells are here in the US.
Our job is to work hand in hand with the Sunni's as we have constantly been screwed with the Shiites.
Our economy needs this war to be over. Our military needs to regroup for operations in Burma and possibly Iran if need be.
The world is changing and there is nothing the US can do but slow it down.

Al Quaida never existed in Iraq because Saddam was there, and would have blasted their ass. That is a fact.

Saddam Hussein as stated by others was a sworn enemy of AlQuaida.....the United States government uses AlQuaida to scare the population...the attacks on Afghanistan were warranted because the Taliban govt was providing a safe haven for AlQuaida.

Funny thing is the United States government were the ones who empowered ALQuaida along with the Taliban in the early 90s as we were their ally in the early 90s fighting the Soviets.

Fighting terrorism is rather stupid anyways because you cant defeat it....terrorism is something that needs to be contained by 1. with better foreign policy and 2. better intelligence

Terrorism will be defeated once we dont hear about anymore because that means out intel is countering it before anything happens.

Do not tell me we have made anything weaker because for every so called terrorist you kill 5 more will pop up and fight for their cause no matter what me or anyone thinks how dumb their cause might be.

This is just another ploy by our government to show us that we are doing something productive in Iraq like 'weakening terrorists'.

The only productive thing that will be done in Iraq will be a full withdrawl but that wont happen until we are done doing whatever it is we are doing but dont tell me we are providing Iraqis with democracy or giving them freedom....thats bullshit

Bin Laden and Saddam had an operational relationship from the early 1990s to 2003 that involved training in explosives and weapons of mass destruction, logistical support for terrorist attacks, al Qaeda training camps and safe haven in Iraq, and Iraqi financial support for al Qaeda. This is the crux of a memo written by Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Douglas J. Feith to Senators Pat Roberts and Jay Rockefeller, the chairman and vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. It was written in response to a request from the committee as part of its investigation into prewar intelligence claims made by the administration. Much of this intelligence, by the way, is from the Clinton era.

Many believed that OBL and Saddam would not work together due to Saddam's secular regime. They were not "sworn enemies". Who are they Superman and Lex Luthor?

Also Bush and Cheney never said that Saddam and 911 were connected. Cheney repeatedly made this point on Meet The Press as recently as last year. The Administration has consistently said that AQ operated and trained in Iraq and Saddam did nothing about it. Those opposed to the war have spun this to say "Bush lied and said that Saddam was responsible for 911."

I have no idea how much is true and how much isn't and neither do you but at least get your initial premise straight.
