  • Five Nobel Winners Back Minimum Wage Hike

    By ELLEN SIMON, AP

NEW YORK (Oct. 12)- More than 650 economists, including five winners of the Nobel Prize for economics, called Wednesday for an increase in the minimum wage, saying the value of the last increase, in 1997, has been "fully eroded."

Economists including Nobel prize winners Kenneth Arrow of Stanford University, Lawrence Klein of the University of Pennsylvania, Robert Solow of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Joseph Stiglitz at Columbia University and Clive Granger of the University of California, San Diego said in a statement released Wednesday that the real value of today's federal minimum wage is less than it has been at any time since 1951.

Federal minimum wage is $5.15 an hour. Twenty-two states and the District of Columbia have set their minimum wages above the federal level. Colorado voters will decide next month whether to approve a constitutional amendment that would set Colorado's minimum wage at $6.85 per hour, to be adjusted annually for inflation.

"We believe that a modest increase in the minimum wage would improve the well-being of low-wage workers and would not have the adverse effects that critics have claimed," the economists wrote.

Critics of a minimum wage hike have contended a higher minimum wage lead employers to cut jobs or move them offshore. They also say that many minimum wage earners are teenagers working after-school jobs.

The economists disagreed, writing that a phased-in increase in the federal minimum wage to $7.25 "falls well within the range of options where the benefits to the labor market, workers, and the overall economy would be positive."

The economists wrote that they share the view of a 1999 Council of Economic Advisors Economic report that found "the weight of the evidence suggests that modest increases in the minimum wage have had very little or no effect on employment."

The economists wrote, "While controversy about the precise employment effects of the minimum wage continues, research has shown that most of the beneficiaries are adults, most are female, and the vast majority are members of low-income working families."

The economists spoke on a conference call hosted by the Economic Policy Institute, an economic research group based in Washington, D.C.

I think that is a little much....I would like to see a provision for 2 minimum wages....1 for students and 1 for head of households.....No way a kid flipping burgers should get $10 per hour....It is a 100% raise.....

Lets remember minimum wage job should be stepping stones to better positions.....

I mean this would throw off the wages for many other professions i would think....I am all for $7.50....That is a 25% increase

that is a valid question.....I just thought of it as i was typing.....I would assume by residency....If you are being decalred as a dependent then you get the minimum wage #1 and if you are the HofH then you get the higher one....Who the hell knows....Just a suggestion

so, do you think they are truthful when filling out welfare??? or when they got their fema debit cards??? you can not have it both ways monte......You want help for the people and now when there is an extra check mark to be made you make excuses....Why would this be any different than any other program when classifications have to be made??? I am sure people claim more than they do for dependents, but that is a small amount....I believe most people are honest....And if not they must fill out an application and get a card saying they are head of household.....This will also employ a few more gov't people....ha ha

i get the feeling if i say black you will say white and if i agree to white you will say well....not really kind of grey...and so on....

What does this have to do with welfare? Or Fema cards?

Simply put people are not going to mark a box that gives them less money, because they are honest. Some will, but a lot won't. I mean do you want to make 25% less than the guy next to you even though you do the same exact job? I doubt it.
