    Bob Baffert

TC Victories: Kentucky Derby (Silver Charm, 1997; Real Quiet, 1998; War Emblem, 2002); Preakness Stakes (Silver Charm, 1997; Real Quiet, 1998; Point Given, 2001; War Emblem, 2002); Belmont Stakes (Point Given, 2001)

After being a fixture in the Triple Crown for eight years, Bob Baffert was noticeably absent in 2004 when he had no starters in the series. In 1996, Baffert landed center stage when his first entrant in the classics, Cavonnier, was nosed out by Grindstone in the Kentucky Derby (G1). He has been on the verge of winning the Triple Crown three times with horses that won the Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1), but lost in the Belmont Stakes (G1): Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (’98), and War Emblem (2002). In 2001, Baffert won the Preakness and Belmont with Horse of the Year Point Given.

In 2003, just 12 years after Bob Baffert became a full-time Thoroughbred trainer, he became only the sixth trainer in history to saddle the earners of more than $100-million in North America. Baffert has won three Eclipse Awards as outstanding trainer, trained seven champions, and was the leading trainer by purse earnings in 2000 with $11,831,605. In 2004, he was fifth in the money-earned category with $7.6-million and 105 winners from 562 starters.

Baffert, 51, grew up on a ranch near Nogales, Arizona, and began working with Quarter Horses at 12; after a brief stint as a Quarter Horse jockey, he saddled his first winner as a trainer in 1971. He relocated to California in 1983, and in ‘86 conditioned Quarter Horse world champion Gold Coast Express. From 1979-’91, Baffert split time between training Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds, switching exclusively to the latter toward the end of ‘91.

In 1992, his first full year as a Thoroughbred trainer, Baffert won ten stakes races, including the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) with Thirty Slews. His clients include Robert and Beverly Lewis, for whom he trained champion Silver Charm; Mike Pegram, for whom he trained champions Real Quiet and Silverbulletday; and Bob and Janice McNair’s Stonerside Stable, for whom he trained champion Chilukki.
