  • Sugar Ray Robinson honored by US Postal Service

New 39 cent stamp honoring Sugar Ray. Can't get the link from yahoo to show you however.

Sugar Ray's record was 128-1-2 with 84 knockouts at the pinnacle of his career. Amazingly, in over 200 fights, Sugar Ray was never physically knocked out (though he did receive one technical KO). Altogether, he amassed 109 KOs, and finished with a record of 175-19-6 with two no-decisions. World champion Muhammad Ali called him "the king, the master, my idol." In 1997, The Ring magazine named Sugar Ray "pound for pound, the best boxer of all time." More recently, in 1999, the Associated Press named him both the greatest welterweight and middleweight boxer of the century.

when carmine bassilio beat him at yankee stadium in 1957 sugar ray was 140-5-2 and had a 6 inch height advantage over basilio.....basilio had a good left hook and was a tough guy, but had a propensity to cut.......he beat sugar ray that night.......he also said that sugar ray was a flashy guy and one of the first fighters who had an entourage...also said he did not like him....carmin saw him out one night in NYC when sugar was the champ and introduced himself and he said sugar ray embarrassed him in front of his wife and was less than a gentleman.....but he was a great fighter....i met carmine a few years ago at the boxing hall of fame...what a guy....
