Saw this on the giants history page... thought it was interesting...
Tim Mara, a bookmaker (legal at the time) and successful businessman and promoter, purchased the team for a reported $500. In an era when professional football was in the shadows of baseball, boxing and college football, and professional football teams hailed from the towns of Dayton, Rochester and Columbus, league officials believed that a team in a large market such as New York was exactly what was needed to keep pro football alive."That ain't working, that's the way you do it... get your money for nothing and your picks for free"

TORONTO - Former NFL running back Dave Meggett will not face a second trail on an assault charge. Meggett, 33, appeared in court Thursday with his lawyers to hear Crown attorney Calvin Barry drop the charge. Meggett, now a college coach in Maryland, faced the possibility of a second trial after a jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict in April. In a Canadian criminal trial, jurors must come to a unanimous decision in order to convict the accused. Meggett, found not guilty of a theft charge, was accused of assaulting an escort worker after a three-way sexual encounter.
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Former NFL running back and punt return specialist Dave Meggett was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct Friday.
Police said Meggett, 35, picked up a 26-year-old woman who had just left a downtown Charleston bar, forced her into his Porsche and had sex with her without her permission.
The woman was drunk, but got away by fighting with Meggett and jumped out of the car on Rutledge Street, police said.
The woman was taken to the Medical University Hospital where she was treated for scrapes and bruises. She also was tested for broken bones in her hand.
The Charleston prosecutor's office said Meggett cannot be charged with rape under state law because the woman was drunk. Meggett, who played for the New York Giants, the New York Jets and New England during his 10-year NFL career, is a native of North Charleston and lives in West Ashley.
Meggett was released from the Patriots in May 1998.
He had been charged with sexual assault in a 1998 case involving a prostitute in a Toronto hotel room. Those charges were dropped when the jury couldn't reach a unanimous verdict.
Meggett was being held at the Charleston County Detention Center on $100,000 bond.
