MLB trade rumors: Yankees benefiting from rival prepping for fire sale?

Chalk this one up as a potential boon for the Yankees.

According to Ken Rosenthal of MLB Network, the Toronto Blue Jays are already preparing a fire sale before the July 31 deadline.

“It’s going to be really interesting to watch the Jays over the next few months because what I believe they’re going to do – what I’m told they’re going to do—is try to trade (Marcus) Stroman, (Aaron) Sanchez, (Justin) Smoak and others to get more young talent in Vladdy’s age range and service class and then build up that way,” Rosenthal said, per SportsNet.

While there’s a slight chance Yankees general manager Brian Cashman could pick off something from Toronto’s roster in a trade, the real benefit for New York comes in the form of how schedule makers constructed the 2019 slate.

The Yankees haven’t played Toronto yet, and only see the Blue Jays six total times in the first half of the season. That leaves 13 head-to-head matchups in the second half of the season. If, say, Toronto trades away their two best starters at the All-Star break, the Yankees could tee off on young, likely below-replacement level arms in meaningful games down the stretch of the season.

With the Rays off to a great start, a three-team (yes, the Red Sox will still be heard from) race for the AL East could go down to the wire in September. Every game, and every potential win over a depleted Blue Jays team, could be a big advantage for the Yankees.
