Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens was released by the team today September 8th 2014 as well as being indefinitely suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell after discovering a video which shows Ray Rice knocking out his then fiancee Janay Palmer now his current wife. The incident took place inside an elevator at the Revel Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. The NFL originally gave Ray Rice a 2 game suspension on July 24th 2014 without seeing the video.
Ray Rice and Janay Palmer married on March 28th 2014 which was one day after a grand jury indicted Rice on aggravated assault charges. Rice avoided a trial by entering a pre-trial diversion program in May.
Goodell even defended Ray Rice shortly after the original 2 game suspension by stating that the ban was “consistent with other cases.” Goodell even was impressed with Ray Rice by stating that “I was also very impressed with Ray in the sense that Ray is not only accepting this issue, but he’s saying “I was wrong.” Goodell went on to say that “I want to see people, when they make a mistake, I want to see them take responsibility and be accountable for it.”
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will have plenty of questions to answer as to why the video wasn't watched and a 2 game sentence was given out without having all the facts. Goodell and the league are changing the policy on the domestic violence per Goodell's letter to league owners last month informing them that he didn't get the Ray Rice verdict right. However, with that being said the way the Ray Rice investigation was handled was poorly leaving numerous questions.
Why was a 2 game suspension only given by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell? As the NFL Commissioner said they had not seen the video until today. Why didn’t the NFL demand to see the video from Rice? One would think that footage of the incident would need to be watched by the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell before dishing out a 2 game suspension.
As for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stating that "He didn't get it right" in the Rice case is too little too late. Had Goodell did his job correctly the NFL would have watched the video and then suspended Rice Indefinitely from the NFL instead of skipping around the issue with the now excuse that they never saw the video to begin with.
It makes one wonder if the NFL is trying to mask such incidents as stars in the NFL like Rice are financially good for the league when playing on the field. This has left many fans of not only the Ravens, but the NFL with numerous questions that need to be answered by Roger Goodell.
