Yankees got really lucky, just like Cards with Pujols. They can basically two more Ellsburys and McCanns and be way better off. A 41 year old 2B getting $25 mill is deadly
I still don't believe cano wants to be in Seattle and I really can't believe that NY chose to pay Ellsbury over cano. Jacoby is often injured and cano is a middle of the lineup kind of guy. I just don't know what the Yankees are thinking or doing right now. A lot of it makes no sense!!!
A lot of people are saying the yanks wouldn't budge off 7 and 175 and they are also saying if they bumped it to 8 and 190 or 200 that cano would have stayed for less. I'm sorry but based on that, I would take cano over ellsbury 8 days a week. Way more durable and a much bigger bat in the lineup. That would be a no brainier for me. Of course, neither guy is worth that money imo
It's not retarded at all. They need quality players. Beltran can play some RF and DH, and he's proven that he won't crack under the spotlight. They need him. Sabathia, Nova, Kuroda, Pineda and they need one more at least. Catcher was killing them last year, now they have McCann. Soriano, Ellsbury and Gardner in the OF. They're paying Vernon Wells peanuts and he's not worth playing. Ichiro is basically done. If ARod gets suspend, that's $25 mill they've have, plus they were still going to sign Cano for $180 mil even after the Ellsbury signing, so they're gonna spend. Beltran is just the start in my opinion. They would've gotten Tanaka for sure.

Difference of opinion I guess.
I think they should have rolled with Soriano in left, Gardner in center and a left/right platoon of Wells & Ichiro in right. Yes, not the strength of your lineup in right but if Boston can win a WS with a Gomes/Nava platoon in left, the Yankees can sure as hell do the same in right. You have 4 guys there. If 1 gets a DL stint, you have the 4th guy to cover it for 2 weeks. Let a couple of those contracts play out and go after a big OF next offseason and after the luxury tax is reset.
I would then sign Cano, a 3B, C, SP and some bullpen help with the rest of the money. You talk like these guys are all 100% healthy BW and that is far from proven with many. Is Jeter 100%? Teixeira? Pineda? McCann, Jeter, Teixeira ... all guys that have been far from healthy the last few years and i'm sure you would have plenty of options at DH there too. Who is closing? Robertson? Is he a proven closer? Who works the 7th and 8th now? I would have signed Cano because he has been the one constant in that lineup the last few years and I would no doubt concentrate on 3B, C (Which they did) and pitching, 1 or 2 starters for sure and bullpen help. Signing 2 more OF's and letting Cano go while putting Kelly Johnson at 2B makes no sense at all to me. You could have had Gardner lead off and you could have Jeter 2nd with Tex, Cano and Soriano as big bats in the middle.
Maybe it all works out for them but IMO and MO only, they fucked this all up by signing Ellsbury and letting Cano walk. There were MUCH bigger needs and problems to solve.
Yankees hater here...great no sign by the Yankees. I was hoping they would give him something outrageous like 10 years 24 mil. He's a great player and may be an MVP candidate for the next 5 years, but then they're stuck paying him 24 mil for 5 more years...He's bound to get hurt 1 year and if it's one of the next 5 years that means you're down to 4 great years of him. It just seems like to make a contract like that worth it EVERYTHING has to go right..which it rarely does

My opinion is Cano isn't a Miguel Cabrera, paying him that is insane and they are way better off with more quality players than just him. Ellsbury and McCann are great players, maybe not Cano, but close enough. They definitely would not win the division next year if they resigned Cano and nothing else. They need more.
Seattle needed to do something, but unless they make two other huge moves, like sign Choo and trade for Price, they're not gonna compete in the AL West.
