  • Source: Jacoby Ellsbury, Yanks agree

    By Jerry Crasnick | ESPN.com

Free-agent outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has reached agreement on a seven-year 153 Million contract with the New York Yankees pending a physical exam, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

The source confirmed a CBSSports.com report that Ellsbury's deal exceeds Carl Crawford's seven-year, $142 million contract with the Boston Red Sox in December 2010.

Ellsbury was on his way from his home in Arizona to New York on Tuesday night to take the physical, the source said.

CBSSports.com first reported that a seven-year deal with Ellsbury appears to be close. ESPN.com's Buster Olney reported the Yankees have an aggressive offer to Ellsbury.

In recent days, the Yankees have become increasingly pessimistic that they will be able to retain second baseman Robinson Cano, feeling as if a team such as the Seattle Mariners would outbid them and top $200 million for Cano.

Tough one to swallow here as a Sox fan. I was a big Ellsbury fan and it will be tough watching him play against us now.

Not sure what the Yankees are doing with their OF though. They now have Ellsbury, Gardner, Ichiro, Wells and Soriano. That's 5 starting OF's?

So much for worrying about that luxury tax. Ellsbury and McCann just cost them $238 million and Cano is still not signed.

Jeter, Arod, Teixeira, McCann and Sabathia are another $110 million. That's 10 players, $185 million and that doesn't include FA's Cano or Kuroda. What will the other 15 players cost to fill out the roster? I assume they will approach $300 million? Mind Boggling!

Soriano is free this year and Wells is close. They need Tanaka and Cano back and they'll be contenders next year.

What do you mean free BW cuz when it comes to the luxury tax, they are anything but free.

I know they owe Soriano $0 this year but not sure how it plays against the luxury tax. They need to win, their tv deal is too huge, they can't worry about the luxury tax. They need to hope ARod's contract is at least partially voided. Jeter is done after this year. Soriano and Ichiro are too, Wells probably close. McCann, Ellsbury, Gardner and Tex is all they're gonna have, so might as well sign guys now. Can't have another season like last year. Tanaka is a must in my opinion.

When are teams going to stop giving out insane contracts. Ellsbury is a good ball player but is it worth it to pay a leadoff hitter $22 million a year. Fuck no. You would think the Yankees would have learned after ARoid. See how many bases he is stealing when he is in the last 2-3 years of the contract.

Yeah but this is the year they need to get below the 189 m luxury tax or they get the biggest penalty of all and have to pay like 80 m. They swore they would not take that hit and they would get under that number. Soriano is on the luxury tax books this year for a HUGE tax hit against them. They are paying, one way or another. They also said this morning that they already have about 140 m tied up in contracts for 2015 too. Their bad contracts are not going away any time soon. McCann, ellsbury, sabathia, tex, arod ..... Those contracts will all look bad in a couple more years too.

Elsbury is a nice player, but he is NOT worth the 3rd highest OF contract in history.

                            Yankees are DUMB, DUMB, DUMB!!
