  • Joe Mauer on trade waiver wire

MINNEAPOLIS - Sources inside Major League Baseball (MLB) say Twins catcher Joe Mauer was placed on waivers late Tuesday.

Fox Sports baseball insider Ken Rosenthal broke the story, saying that a MLB source told him that the Twins put Mauer on trade waivers in an effort to dangle him as trade bait. The move expires at noon central standard time.

KARE 11 sports director Eric Perkins says despite the initial shock of the report it is really not that big a deal. Perkins says most players, even the league's superstars, are regularly placed on waivers throughout their career in an effort to see what other team will claim them, and what a potential trade could bring.

If a team goes decide to make a waiver claim, MLB rules say they have 72 hours to work out a trade with the team that holds the player's rights.

Speculation is widespread that the Boston Red Sox are the team that may be eyeing up Mauer. The Sox just dumped $275 million in salaries in a megadeal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, and have the money to swallow a contract that will pay Joe Mauer an average of $23 million per year.

The news breaks just hours before a major announcement is made at Target Field, that MLB will stage the 2014 All-Star Game in the Twin Cities.
