A disappointing season for the Sooner football team and fans alike comes to an end tonight in the Insight Bowl vs. a 7-5 Iowa team. Oklahoma played horrible down the stretch going 3-3 their last 6 games after opening the season ranked #1 and winning their first 6 games. Included in those 3 losses were losses to a horrible Texas Tech team and a high octane offensive team Baylor, which was previously 0-20 all time agianst the Sooners, but that also had porrous defense as evidenced last night in their bowl game.
When the line came out, I immediately thought I've got to hammer Iowa. The turning point for OU's season I feel like was when Ryan Broyles tore his ACL. Not only was he one of best receivers in the nation, but he was Landry Jones go to guy, his comfort zone. It was no coincidence that Jones did not throw another TD pass all season long after Broyles injury. Now a lot of that has to do with the "BellDozer" package OU installed in the redzone where they inserted backup QB Blake Bell into a Tebow like formation where they power ran the football.
There has been a lot of house cleaning at OU since the regular season. It has been no secret the Bob Stoops was disappointed and pretty pissed off about how the year played out. Several players were told by Stoops that there scholarships would not be renewed due to players skipping classes, issues with drug testing, or flat out not working hard. Just because you play at OU doesn't mean you get everything handed to you is essentially what Bob told these kids. I think this sets a nice tone going forward, but I don't think it has much of an effect on this game.
There has also been quite a bit of speculation about Mike Stoops returning to the OU sidelines next year. I have to believe it is true as Urban Meyer was set to make Mike the highest paid assistant coach out there and Mike turned the Ohio State D-Cord position down. Mike has recently bought a house in OKC as well. I think there will be some shakeup with the coaching staff after the bowl game tonight as I believe this will be DB coach Willie Martinez's last game with the Sooners, an area which was supposed to be a strength, but has been abused over and over this year. Mike will be back coaching the DB's next year and taking over the play calling duties from current D-cord Brent Venables.
All that being said, OU has supreme talent over Iowa. Iowa's QB Vandenberg is pretty inconsistent and I think will have a hard time beating OU's dbacks no matter how bad they've been at times this year. Their passing game is set up by the run game and OU's strength this year has been stopping the run with great D-line play. Nebraska ran straight over them when Iowa knew it was coming and couldn't do anything about it. Minnesota also beat them.
Right now, I'd take a small bet on Iowa + but after the beers get flowing later, I'm sure I'll be on OU
Hope this helps, just wanted to throw my 2 cents out there.
Good luck if you play one way or the other!
