Third-Place Florida Panthers Test Mettle Against NHL Odds Contender San Jose

If someone were to say over the NHL offseason that the Florida Panthers would have more points than the San Jose Sharks at the beginning of December, they would have been laughed out of the building. Now well into the second quarter of the season, it’s a strange reality confounding the NHL betting community.

The clubs square off against each other this Saturday.

Think Florida can continue to win games? Weigh in with Bodog’s NHL betting odds.

Though the Panthers aren’t about to start planning their championship parade anytime soon, their early display of quality hockey bodes well for the team’s future. They may hold just 35/1 odds of winning the Stanley Cup, but with general manager Dale Tallon at the helm - the same man who built the 2010 champion Chicago Blackhawks - it’s a sign of what’s to come.

Leading the charge for the Panthers have been forwards Kris Versteeg, Tomas Fleischmann and Stephen Weiss. Although Tallon is the architect of the upstart franchise, it’s the point-per-game production they’ve received from their top three that have made them a threat to win on any given night.

Will Versteeg et al continue to produce at such a torrid rate heading forward? In the Sharks they’ll face a perennial contender that’s just now building momentum for the first time in 2011-12. Despite their ninth-place status in the West, The San Jose Sharks sit at a whopping 9/1 on the NHL futures board.
