I blame Reid for shockingly undiscaplened team, investing huge franchis $ in Vick, moving O line coach to D accord, over paying nmadi.
Reids Fault: Fact- It's hard to argue with Skip that Reid does not deserve a large part of the blame for this disaster of a season so far. Never has an Eagles team looked as unprepared as they did yesterday for a must win game, as they carelessy turned the ball over and showed in the first half really a general lack of caring or effort.
Investing in Vick: Fiction- No doubt that when Joe Banner shelled out big money to Michael Vick, he did not have a 1-4 start in mind. But for all of the problems the Eagles have, Vick is far down the list. Vick is top ten in yards, tied for 6th most passing TD's, and is 16th in the league in rushing. His interceptions have been a problem, but as Reid pointed out, a good portion of those are simply not his fault. Vick is still a top 10 quarterback in a quarterback driven league. The Eagles had no choice but to pay him, and pay him big.
Moving Castillo to Defense: Fact: Clearly, the decision to move Castillo to defensive coordinator has proven to be a disastouris one. Castillo's defense looks lost, out of place, and is playing fundamentally poor football. You have to wonder if the sudden inability to tackle comes from the fact that their coordinator spent the last 10 seasons telling his players not to tackle on the offensive line. Castillo's unit has put this team in big holes, and blown leads when given them. He is a hard worker, great with the media, but overall has been a big bust.
Overpaying Nnamdi Asomugha: Fact: Hind sight is 20/20 when it comes to signing free agents. It is easy to say that signing Asomugha was a mistake based on his early play, and the fact that his presence has not helped the defense whatsoever. The argument could be made that the defense would be even worse without him, but Asomugha has had a big hand in the defensive break downs, and has committed stupid penalties like the rest of the team. At the time of the signing, Asomugha was viewed as the top free agent, and was by some accounts close to signing with the Dallas Cowboys. The Eagles throwing big money at Asomugha was considered a no brainer at the time- get a Hall-of-Fame caliber cornerback, and keep him from the Cowboys. But now that all of the holes on this team are so evident- especially at saftey and linebacker- you have to wonder if the money would have been better spent upgradining those positions.
MVICK sets the high risk, reckless, herky-jerkey tone for the phillies offense, Nmadi the no-tackling over-hyped tone for the defense.
Vick, Nnamdi Set Tone: Fiction- It is easy to single out Vick and Nnamdi, but the fact is that every player on offense and defense has the same personality. In general, players on the Eagles offense are inconsistant players who at times makes plays and at other times go silent for long stretches. DeSean Jackson fits that mold better then Vick. On defense, Asante Samuel is a way better example of what is wrong with the Eagles defense- high risk, high reward players who get burned at times but also make a big play occasionally.
Vince Young would save Philly's season. Vick a fantasy football superhero. Vince Young just Wins. Offense would be more efficient, run-oriented with Vince Young.
Start Young over Vick: Like Eskins love for Reid, Bayless has never been silent about his love for Vince Young. But to suggest that the Eagles would be better with Young is simply not true. Young has shown he can win the NFL, but so has Vick. Young is no better at reading defenses, he is slower and a less accurate passer. Vick has avoided defenders coming in without being touched all season, and has managed to turn those plays into big gains.
Overall, Bayless's description of the Eagles is fair- over hyped, sloppy, underachieving players. He fails to mention that the Eagles have plenty of upside, and that while their season has been marked by numerous stupid penalties and plays, they have done alot of things well this season.
But like the rest of the national media, Bayless could end up eating his words if the Eagles are able to turn it around.
