In his two seasons with the Red Sox, pitcher John Lackey has done little to endear himself to fans. (His ERA this season is the highest in team history for a starter with at least 150 innings pitched.) But Lackey’s image took an even bigger hit yesterday when TMZ revealed that the righthander filed for divorce from his wife, Krista - who’s battling breast cancer.

Neither Lackey nor his wife would comment on the report, and judging from his tone at a post-game presser with reporters after his start Sunday, Lackey won’t be talking much about his dissolving marriage in the future. “Thirty minutes before the game, I got a text message on my cellphone from one of you . . . somebody in the media, talking about personal stuff,’’ he said, sounding more than a little agitated. “I shouldn’t even be standing up here having to deal with this . . . that’s over the line.’’

Uncharacteristically, the Red Sox issued a statement on the matter yesterday saying, “John Lackey is dealing with a deeply personal family issue, and it is one the Red Sox do not feel is appropriate for public debate. The Red Sox request that John and Krista’s privacy be respected.’’

TMZ reports that Lackey filed for divorce on Aug. 30 in his native Texas, with the pitcher claiming “the marriage has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities.’’ (According to the website, Lackey filed the papers using his and Krista’s initials, something Tony Parker and Eva Longoria and Sandra Bullock and Jesse James also did in their Texas divorces.) Married in November 2008, Lackey and his wife do not have children. They own a three-bedroom townhouse on Beacon Street, for which they paid $2.05 million.

When he signed with the Red Sox, Lackey told reporters that his wife, who grew up in the southern Maine mill town of Sanford and attended the University of New Hampshire, wanted him to play in Boston. “I definitely had to have my agent really let (the Red Sox) know I was serious about this. The wife helped out a lot,’’ he said at the time.

Boston Red Sox pitcher John Lackey has filed to divorce his wife, Krista ... who is in the middle of battling breast cancer.

Lackey filed on August 30, according to court docs in Texas, claiming "the marriage has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities." Krista and John got married in November, 2008.

Sources close to the family tell TMZ ... Krista underwent a double mastectomy back in March and underwent chemo as recently as June.

The divorce petition says John and Krista had a prenup. It also says Lackey has "separate property" he wants to keep for himself.

Lackey filed the divorce papers using only his and Krista's initials -- a tactic Tony Parker and Eva Longoria ... and Sandra Bullock and Jesse James also used in their Texas divorces.

It's unclear why Lackey -- who's struggled on the field all season long -- didn't wait til the off-season, about a month from now, to start divorce proceedings.

    Lackey's camp had no comment.

John Lackey enraged by text message

NEW YORK -- Boston pitcher John Lackey was highly emotional after Sunday night's dramatic 7-4, 14-inning Red Sox win, but his agitated state had little to do with the outcome of the game.

Instead, Lackey lashed out at the media because of a text message he said he received from a member of the media about 30 minutes before his start that he claimed was "personal" in nature and "over the line," though he offered no details. The Red Sox issued a statement on the matter Monday.

"John Lackey is dealing with a deeply personal family issue, and it is one the Red Sox do not feel is appropriate for public debate," it read. "The Red Sox request that John and Krista's privacy be respected. The Red Sox will not have any further comment."

Lackey's hostility Sunday was apparent from the first question, when he took exception to a questioner describing a three-run first inning as "rocky."

"There was one hard-hit ball in that rocky first inning," said Lackey, who has been widely maligned for his pitching during a season in which his 6.41 ERA is the highest ever for a Red Sox starter who has thrown more than 150 innings. "A ground ball that went by somebody. Let's be honest, one time. Whatever."

Lackey recovered from the first inning to pitch five scoreless innings until the seventh, when he was lifted after giving up a leadoff single to Eric Chavez, which ultimately led to a fourth run. Television cameras caught Lackey cursing from the mound to the dugout, apparently upset with manager Terry Francona's decision to remove him. But by pitching into the seventh, Lackey had offered a welcome break from a stretch in which Red Sox starters had pitched five innings or fewer in six of the last seven games and 15 times this month.

To a question about what kind of boost the team received from his effort Sunday, he offered a terse, "We just needed to win a game."

But when asked by Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald, "How do you think you pitched," Lackey veered off topic in a big way.

"Let me tell you the truth," Lackey said. "Thirty minutes before the game I got a text message on my cell phone from one of you, somebody in the media, talking about personal stuff. I shouldn't even have to be standing up here dealing with it.

"I'm sitting here, listening to music. I don't know who got my phone number, but that's over the line.

"Anything else you want to talk about?"

Last winter, it was reported that Lackey's wife, Krista, was undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and after a particularly rough start in May, Lackey blurted, "Everything in my life sucks right now."

Before meeting with reporters Sunday night, Lackey had a brief but animated discussion with a club official about the text message and how his phone number had gotten out. There were indications Sunday night that a celebrity/gossip website had sent him the text message, but that could not be confirmed. The website TMZ subsequently published an item about Lackey's marriage on Monday morning at 3:55 a.m. ET.

When asked if he suspected anyone standing in front of him, Lackey said, "I'll find out."

He also was asked if the text message had distracted him on the mound.

"I don't believe I've got to deal with this," he said.

Even after the interview broke up, Lackey continued to rage. "I can't believe … Any of you who would get into that is going to have a serious problem."

Way to be a man and be there for your wife John. Not shocking with this POS though! He was pulled again from last nights game and you could clearly hear and see him scream "That's fuckin bullshit" when Francona took the ball from him. The guy gets absolutely ABUSED on the radio up here on a daily basis .........

                        Karma baby ...

Even though there are 2 sides to every story, him filing for divorce could have had better timing.
