  • Evolution of the Passing game in the NFL

In Week 1 there were 14 QB's who threw for 300 or more yards.

In 1970, there were (8) 300 or more yard passing games in the entire season with all teams combined.

I think people love watching the passing game and i really think it has been a big part in the growth and popularity in this sport over the last several years. Many teams do not even carry a FB anymore.

    Thoughts?

My thought is you can pass more because u cant touch the wide receivers anymore and the QB can sit back there and not b worried about anyone hitting him low or high. I think its a joke, they want to make 20 mil a year I say if i am trying to win I am gonna knock him out.

It may be a joke gizmo but i believe you have to protect the QB. It is the most important position in sports and nothing good comes from a team or city seeing their season end when one player goes down.

They must be doing something right because the NFL is miles ahead of the other 3 major sports combined in TV contracts and popularity. The money being paid to carry these games is mind boggling and the people who are paying want the star QB's around to get the return on their $1 and i don't blame them.

Players are also MUCH bigger and stronger than they were "back in the day" and you simply have to take that in to account. If you don't, you are not growing with the game IMO.

People love scoring in this Country. The long ball is what brought baseball fans back and people love the long ball in football too. There is a reason why Soccer will never be popular in this Country and it is because people want scoring. Maybe old timers love a 3-0 game but the new generation that is showing up and paying or buying the jerseys don't.

the reason i think football is #1 on television and revenue is how its exciting every play.even on rushing plays you have linebackers unloading on running backs, its exciting every play.you also have a commisoner who is listening to fans and doing what is right for the sport.baseball and selig is so out of touch on what the fans wamt its crazy.just like sunday telling the mets that they could not wear 9/11 hats honoring the fire dept and police.baseball and the owners could not be further from its fanbase.at least nfl owners do listen and i feel like every team trys to put a nice team on the field every game of every year.some baseball teams know from spring training that they can not compete and trade away players when they are eligible for free agency its just hard to watch baseball if the owners do not put the very best team on the field.

I honestly think the biggest reason for football exploding the way it has is actually Fantasy Football. You have taken millions and millions of people who used to only watch their team and maybe some night games to watching Buffalo vs Cleveland if they have Hillis and Stevie Johnson on their fantasy team.

The evolution of the passing game certainly has reached the NFL but it doesn't neccessarily equate to winning. I believe out of the top 6 passing teams this week 4 lost and I believe it was just the opposite for the top running teams.

I didnt say I agree or disagree with anything you said I told you my opinion of why it is easy to pass. You cant do anything to stop it is the reason. As for the popularity it is because everyone can bet on football and survivor pools and somewhat fantasy also so anyone can stay involved. Its normally 1-2 days a week you need to watch not like other sports when its every day.People always say this season or that season are to long about other sports but its not the length of the season that takes away the popularity its the every day aspect of it. People nowadays cant take time for it.

How many QBs used to get knocked out 10-30 years ago and be finished. It was the Patriots holding every WR is when they decided to change that rule.So thats the passing game.

The rules that help the passing game would be like the MLB coming up with a rule like you can only throw so many curveballs per game because we dont want you to hurt your arm because your to important and cant survive if you get hurt.

I kinda agree with the fantasy football thing but i kinda don't too.

There is fantasy Baseball, Hockey and Basketball too. Why havn't they added to their sports popularity?

I kinda think the popularity of the NFL has added to the popularity of Fantasy Football, not the other way around as some mentioned.

I know fantasy is huge in NFL. I do my betting on Saturdays. I bet sparingly Sunday and root for my fantasy teams.

fantasy is the same thing you have any idea how many people dont want to do baseball because its everyday and u need to follow who is pitching and who gets hurt.

football is so much easier and betting ,no one likes laying 240 on the phillies and yankees they would rather just say whats the line and its 110 for 100 simple

I have no idea because i play in 3 fantasy baseball leagues every year and it is the only thing i am good at. I love it!

As far as part 2 goes, i love hooking those favorites up in parlays or playing the RL's too. It is no different than most NFL games if you play the money line. Just look at the ML's this sunday, 10 x's higher than a MLB ML!

I think Fantasy Football is far more exciting then the rest of the fantasy games. And the way I see it, football would be the most popular sport no matter what, but it would still be with a vast majority just watching their own team and then some random night games etc. vs now when you have house wives playing fantasy football(and not baseball or basketball or hockey) that want to watch random games bc their player is playing in it. And like the sport itself, bc of only 16 games vs gazillion in the others the fantasy is more exciting bc you watch them play one game and that decides the outcome for the week and increases the single game value by a lot.

I agree with several post in here, I think the short season, passing game, fantasy aspect, and really important is the salary structure set up so that anyone can win.

If you dont overspend on Free agents, draft well, have good management and coaching anyone can win in this league.

Wayne u r talking on a site to people that gamble I know what u r talking about with the parlays and fantasy baseball. I am talking about the everyday person that may play a game here and there, they dont do it on baseball they do it on football and they have little league to go to soccer games or something that they cant watch baseball or do fantasy everyday but football is Sunday they can try and find time that 1 day to watch there fav team and maybe throw something on it.

How many bars can you go to that have the baseball package and who wants to stay up all the time to watch the 10 oclk baseball games. You can go to almost every town and there will be a bar you can go to that has football package and you can watch fav team every week.
