NFL Odds Adjusting To Trades And Free Agents
Based on early betting so far this preseason on 2011 NFL futures and win totals, the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets will be among the top contenders to not only capture their respective conference but also win Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis next February 5.
The Eagles have made a slew of moves on the free agent market and figure to challenge the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers in the NFC. The Jets have also picked up some key players to emerge as one of the top teams in the AFC alongside the New England Patriots.
The first week of preseason action kicks off this Thursday with five games, including the debut of Philly’s so-called “dream team” against the Baltimore Ravens at 4:30 p.m. (PT).
Backup QB Vince Young called the Eagles by that moniker when he inked a one-year deal with them, becoming the fourth former Pro Bowler acquired by the team within two days. Philadelphia is one of three co-favorites to win the Super Bowl at 6/1, joining the Packers and Patriots.
The Eagles are 3-point home favorites according to the Don Best odds screen against the Ravens (15/1), who figure to challenge the Jets (12/1), Indianapolis Colts (15/1) and Patriots (6/1) for the AFC’s spot in the Super Bowl. Baltimore has not made any major moves but should remain one of the top defensive teams in the NFL while the team’s offense continues to improve behind QB Joe Flacco and RB Ray Rice.
Another intriguing game on Thursday involves the potential debut of Arizona Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb on the road against the Oakland Raiders (-3½) at 7:00 p.m. Kolb was dealt from Philadelphia for CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round draft pick, and he should assume the starting reins right away as long as he is familiar with the playbook.
However, like most preseason NFL games, key starters like Kolb will likely not be in there long, especially in the first game. The move of Kolb from the Eagles to the Cardinals saw Arizona's future odds drop from 100/1 to win the Super Bowl to as low as 50/1 in some places.
The Raiders (50/1) are one of 13 home favorites this week, which is very common in exhibition football. Green Bay (-2 at Cleveland) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (-1 at Washington) are the only two road favorites in Week 1 of the preseason while the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are listed as a pick ’em at Arrowhead Stadium on Friday.
Oakland’s AFC West rival Denver will also begin to sort its quarterback controversy out when the Broncos visit the Dallas Cowboys (-4). Former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow had thought he would get the starting job this year until Denver decided against trading veteran Kyle Orton. Now Tebow looks more like he will be battling Brady Quinn for the backup spot behind Orton.
The Broncos are a 60/1 longshot to win the Super Bowl while the Cowboys are 25/1.
The remaining Thursday games include New England (-4) hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Seattle Seahawks visiting the San Diego Chargers (-4½) on ESPN.
