NFL Odds Adjusting To Trades And Free Agents

Based on early betting so far this preseason on 2011 NFL futures and win totals, the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets will be among the top contenders to not only capture their respective conference but also win Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis next February 5.

The Eagles have made a slew of moves on the free agent market and figure to challenge the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers in the NFC. The Jets have also picked up some key players to emerge as one of the top teams in the AFC alongside the New England Patriots.

The first week of preseason action kicks off this Thursday with five games, including the debut of Philly’s so-called “dream team” against the Baltimore Ravens at 4:30 p.m. (PT).

Backup QB Vince Young called the Eagles by that moniker when he inked a one-year deal with them, becoming the fourth former Pro Bowler acquired by the team within two days. Philadelphia is one of three co-favorites to win the Super Bowl at 6/1, joining the Packers and Patriots.

The Eagles are 3-point home favorites according to the Don Best odds screen against the Ravens (15/1), who figure to challenge the Jets (12/1), Indianapolis Colts (15/1) and Patriots (6/1) for the AFC’s spot in the Super Bowl. Baltimore has not made any major moves but should remain one of the top defensive teams in the NFL while the team’s offense continues to improve behind QB Joe Flacco and RB Ray Rice.

Another intriguing game on Thursday involves the potential debut of Arizona Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb on the road against the Oakland Raiders (-3½) at 7:00 p.m. Kolb was dealt from Philadelphia for CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round draft pick, and he should assume the starting reins right away as long as he is familiar with the playbook.

However, like most preseason NFL games, key starters like Kolb will likely not be in there long, especially in the first game. The move of Kolb from the Eagles to the Cardinals saw Arizona's future odds drop from 100/1 to win the Super Bowl to as low as 50/1 in some places.

The Raiders (50/1) are one of 13 home favorites this week, which is very common in exhibition football. Green Bay (-2 at Cleveland) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (-1 at Washington) are the only two road favorites in Week 1 of the preseason while the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are listed as a pick ’em at Arrowhead Stadium on Friday.

Oakland’s AFC West rival Denver will also begin to sort its quarterback controversy out when the Broncos visit the Dallas Cowboys (-4). Former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow had thought he would get the starting job this year until Denver decided against trading veteran Kyle Orton. Now Tebow looks more like he will be battling Brady Quinn for the backup spot behind Orton.

The Broncos are a 60/1 longshot to win the Super Bowl while the Cowboys are 25/1.

The remaining Thursday games include New England (-4) hosting the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Seattle Seahawks visiting the San Diego Chargers (-4½) on ESPN.

    Seahawks-Chargers kick off preseason Thursday

    SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

    at SAN DIEGO CHARGERS

    NFL Preseason Game
    Kickoff: Thursday, 8:00 p.m. EDT
Line: San Diego -4.5, Total: 37

The Seahawks kick off their preseason schedule with plenty of new faces when they visit San Diego Thursday night.

The Seahawks went 8-4 SU over the past three preseasons, but just 1-3 in Pete Carroll’s first preseason last year. But they have a backup quarterback who’s been strong in preseason action, as Charlie Whitehurst coming off the bench gives them a major advantage in preseason games. The pick is SEATTLE.

The Seahawks are breaking in a new starting quarterback in Tarvaris Jackson and a couple of new top receivers for him in former Vikings teammate Sidney Rice and former Oakland tight end Zach Miller. Seattle also has a new offensive coordinator in Darrell Bevell, who coached Jackson and Rice as Minnesota’s offensive coordinator from 2006-10. They don’t have a major transition to make.

The Chargers kept the core of their 2010 roster intact, so they won’t have to play their starters for extended reps. San Diego is 6-6 SU in the preseason over the past three years, including 1-3 last year. Billy Volek and rookie Scott Tolzien are likely to see the majority of action at quarterback behind Philip Rivers.

These teams met at Seattle in Week 3 last year. The Seahawks won 27-20 despite being outgained 518-271, behind two Leon Washington kickoff return touchdowns in the second half.

Odds to Win Super Bowl XLVI

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the 2011 NFL season, odds have been posted at Sportsbook.com for who will win Super Bowl XLVI.
Of the top six Super Bowl favorites, defending champion Green Bay opened as the only NFC representative in the group. New England was the odds-on favorite, followed by AFC Champion Pittsburgh, which was the only other team below 10/1. Baltimore, New York Jets and San Diego all opened at 12/1, while the NFC had four teams open at 15/1: Atlanta, New Orleans, New York Giants and Philadelphia.

Despite winning a playoff game this past season, Seattle opened as one of just four teams with odds at 100/1 or greater for 2011. Carolina opened as the biggest long shot at 300/1 and Buffalo as the biggest AFC longshot at 200/1.

        Handicapping the Preseason

        August 10, 2011

The ‘Great Debate’ continues every year throughout the month of August. Is it wise to expose your bankroll during the exhibition season, or is it better to wait for the real games to begin?
If you’re like me and believe that handicapping is largely a practice of putting as many edges in your favor as possible, the answer is yes. Two major edges in the preseason are found in studying quarterback rotations and evaluating coaching tendencies.

        Quarterback Controversies

Teams that are embroiled in a quarterback controversy, or those looking to establish a 2nd string signal caller, are often times profitable during the preseason. In addition, 3rd string quarterbacks with NFL experience make for nice edges when they find playing time in the 4Q of games against opponents’ 3rd and 4th units.

        Coaching Tendencies

Isolating coaches that ‘play for keeps’ can also be an invaluable edge, especially when paired against those who take a nonchalant approach to the preseason. In addition, 1st year coaches and those on the ‘hot-seat’ tend to have a stronger desire to win games early and often. RECORDS

        Dress Rehearsal

One final thought. Dress rehearsal games (Game 3 of the preseason) often times finds the coaches that ‘play for keeps’ going balls to the wall with their starters. If they found what they were looking for in these games they tend to use the final practice games as a test for final roster spots, playing fringe players more extensively.

That’s my take on the NFL preseason. Perhaps more so than ever it’s best to play with caution and only when you feel you have a real edge working in your favor.

          Preseason Coaching Tips

          August 6, 2011

We've all heard the saying "there's gold in them thar hills."

Well, if we take a quick peek at NFL coaches and their preseason tendencies, there sure looks like there IS money to be made before September - and without making the climb! While coaches like Andy Reid, Jim Caldwell and Todd Haley don't put much credence in exhibition play, the same cannot be said for Jack Del Rio, Tony Sparano or Jim Schwartz.

Even though the league has 32 head coaches, let's take a look at the 25 with preseason experience and their tendencies.

              Preseason Profit Report

              August 8, 2011

This will be a totally different preseason for every NFL head coach, both old and new alike. Usually head coaches will come into camp after a ton of organized team activities (OTA) and team meetings under their belt, and having a good idea which players will fill the majority of his 53-man roster.

              NOT THIS SEASON!!!

With only around 10 days to prepare for their first preseason game the majority of the coaches I have heard from are saying "they are not getting a good feeling putting their top players on the field at all in this short a period of time to prepare.”

After hearing those words, it appears that the smart move is to take a step back and see how these teams approach their opening preseason games and handicap accordingly.

It’s extremely important this season to gather as much information as possible and listen to every sound byte or video clip that the head coaches make available. With those alone, you’re assured to get a huge edge over the oddsmakers and betting public.

I will be monitoring this closely and will release anything I come across that gives us a winning edge.

However I also feel once the preseason progresses things may return to some sort of familiarity for the teams and coaches.

Despite the uncertainty expected over the next four weeks, I have listed my top 10 Preseason Trends to keep an eye out for this year’s slate.

Top 10 Preseason Trends and Analysis

              1) Kansas City Chiefs - Kansas City has been one of the best fade teams in the preseason going an incredible 2-15 against the spread over the past four years. I definitely look for more of the same this year especially in these early games after reading this quote from head coach Todd Haley. He said, "I don’t know if we want to shoot all our guns in the first team talk because we don’t have everybody.” He added about his veterans, “It was a skeleton crew, it didn’t feel like training camp.”

              2) Indianapolis Colts - Indianapolis never cared about winning in the preseason with Tony Dungy as head coach. Well things have sure continued with Jim Caldwell leading the troops, as the Colts have gone 5-12 against the spread over the past four seasons while losing all of their preseason openers in this span. Plus throw in the fact that with Manning recovering from his second neck surgery, the Colts offense this preseason will be lead by backup Curtis Painter. A very scary thought!

              3) Pittsburgh Steelers - This is one of my strongest preseason trends to watch for as the Steelers have seen the ‘under’ go an amazing 17-4 over the past five years in the preseason. With all the uncertainty coming into this year’s preseason I definitely can see this trend continuing.

              4) Atlanta Falcons - One of my favorite preseason plays goes here on the Falcons as in their “Dress Rehearsal” game. The last seven years the Falcons have gone a perfect 7-0 outscoring their opposition 164-75. This year’s “Dress Rehearsal” game for the Falcons will be on Aug. 27 when they play Pittsburgh on the road.

              5) Philadelphia Eagles - Another one of my favorite preseason plays is on the Eagles as Andy Reid doesn’t go all out in the first preseason game of the year going a perfect 0-7 in their opener not winning their first preseason game since 2003. The Eagles open up this year against Baltimore at home on Aug. 11.

              6) Baltimore Ravens - In the past six preseason’s, the Ravens have played some really low-scoring games with the ‘under’ going a money making 17-6. This trend has continued with new head coach John Harbaugh playing it close to the vest as the Ravens have watched the under go 9-3 in his first three years has head coach.

              7) Green Bay Packers - Under head coach Mike McCarthy a solid trend has developed that has seen the Packers incorporate a wide-open game plan over the past five years. During this stretch, the ‘over’ has posted an impressive 15-5 record in the preseason. After winning the Super Bowl, I can definitely see this trend playing out again this year as the Green Bay's intensity level can't be that high coming into camp.

              8) Chicago/Cleveland - One scenario I always look forward to in the preseason is when the Bears and Browns matchup in their final preseason game. This has occurred the past eight years with the ‘under’ going an amazing 7-1. Both organizations just want to get through this game and run, run, and run the ball all game long. This year’s game will take place on Thursday Sept. 1 in Chicago.

              9) San Diego Chargers - This will be Norv Turner’s fifth year as head coach of the Chargers. In Turner’s last head coaching job with the Raiders back in 2004, a solid trend can be taken away from it that can give us an edge for the Chargers’ preseason games. First of all, in both of his dress rehearsal games in Oakland the Raiders went 0-2 against the spread, this trend has continued as Turner has not covered his "Dress Rehearsal" game the first four years in San Diego, making him now a perfect 0-6 ATS. This year’s dress rehearsal game for the Chargers will be at Arizona on Saturday Aug. 27.

              10) Jacksonville Jaguars - While it may look like all these early preseason games may just be low-scoring and nothing more than scrimmages. It appears that we might have a huge edge here with Jacksonville. Head coach Jack Del Rio has emphasized offense in his opening preseason game, with the Jaguars seeing the ‘over’ go 5-0 in their openers since 2006. This year, Jacksonville pays a visit to New England on Thursday Aug. 11 to start off the preseason.

Bucs and Chiefs start preseason on Friday

                TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

                at KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

                Kickoff: Friday, 8:00 p.m. EDT
Line: Tampa Bay -3, Total: 33

Two of last season’s surprise teams kick of their 2011 preseasons when the Buccaneers visit Kansas City on Friday night.

You wouldn’t have predicted success for either of these teams based on last year’s preseason; Tampa went 2-2 while K.C. went 1-3. But considering the Bucs are the team with the more seasoned back-up—Tampa has Josh Johnson, while the Chiefs have only rookie Ricky Stanzi and journeyman Tyler Palko—that will give them an edge in this preseason matchup. Factor in that the Chiefs are 1-7 SU in the preseason since head coach Todd Haley took over, and the pick is TAMPA BAY.

The Chiefs won the AFC West last year, but it was due in large part to a very soft schedule. They played only three regular-season games against teams who finished with winning records (their only win was over San Diego in a torrential rain storm), and they were blown out of their own stadium by Baltimore in the Wild Card playoff round. K.C. will be working in a couple of new receivers in Steve Breaston, who played under Haley in Arizona, and talented rookie Jon Baldwin. The Chiefs could be without TE Tony Moeaki on Friday, after he underwent minor offseason knee surgery.

Tampa Bay improved seven wins to 10-6 last season, but the Bucs struggled to stop the run last season (2nd-worst in NFL at 4.7 yards per carry allowed). They’ll have a major test against the Chiefs’ power running game. They’ll likely use rookie Mason Foster to replace long-time veteran Barrett Ruud (now with Tennessee) at middle linebacker, and his play will be key in their undersized front seven. A third-round pick, Foster is undersized himself at 6-foot-1, 241 pounds.

                  AFC North Preview

                  August 11, 2011

The top-heavy AFC North has seen the Steelers and Ravens combine for six playoff appearances since 2007. The two rivals are expected to finish atop the division again this season, even though Baltimore has failed to win a division title under John Harbaugh. Another question mark inside the AFC North involves the Ohio teams as both the Browns and Bengals fight for relevance behind the Steelers and Ravens.

Pittsburgh (14-5 SU, 12-7 ATS) held its ground without Ben Roethlisberger for the first four games of last season by winning three times. All five of the Steelers' losses came to playoff teams, including home defeats to the Ravens, Patriots, and Jets. In Mike Tomlin's tenure as head coach, the Steelers are 20-6 SU and 16-9-1 ATS against division opponents, including a 13-3 SU and 10-6 ATS mark against the Ohio clubs.

The Ravens (13-5 SU, 9-8-1 ATS) haven't lost consecutive games since October 2009, as Harbaugh owns a 36-19 SU record since his arrival in 2008. Baltimore took care of its business as road favorites with a 4-1 SU/ATS mark, including the dominating playoff victory at Kansas City in the Wild Card round. The Ravens host the Steelers in Week 1, as Baltimore has failed to cover in each of the last three home contests against Pittsburgh.

VegasInsider.com handicapper Antony Dinero is looking forward to this battle atop the AFC North, "It's a shame they won't square off after early November, but watching them go at each other in Week 1 should be fun. With Roethlisberger set to start the season drama-free, Pittsburgh is the current choice to win the division."

On the flip side, handicapper Pat Hawkins believes that Baltimore will finally break through, "This is the year that the Ravens will step up and claim the AFC North as their division. Baltimore finished 12-4 last season and will be hungry, while Pittsburgh is coming off a Super Bowl loss, a position in which few teams succeed."

The battle for third place will be an interesting one between the Buckeye State rivals. The Browns (5-11 SU, 5-10-1 ATS) pulled off some nice underdog victories last season over the Patriots and Saints, but finished with four consecutive losses. Cleveland's offense needs to improve mightily after averaging 17 ppg, while scoring 17 points or less in 10 games (resulting in seven 'unders').

Hawkins says Cleveland can turn some heads in 2011, "The Browns offense struggled last year but that was to be accepted as they enter the season knowing that Colt McCoy would take his lumps. With a year of experience under his belt, McCoy will be improved as he showed flashes last season with a nice road win at New Orleans. Mike Holmgren and company are now into year two of rebuilding, I expect this team to finish with seven or eight wins this season, going over the 6 ½ posted win total.

The Bengals (4-12 SU, 7-9 ATS) wouldn't be the Bengals without off-season controversy as Carson Palmer vows he will never play another game in a Cincinnati uniform. So that leaves the Bengals without a proven quarterback, while both Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens aren't returning. The only positive for Cincinnati is the 4-1 ATS run to close out last season, including home wins over the Browns and Chargers. In fact, Marvin Lewis has found a way to get his team up as a home underdog since 2008 with a 9-3 ATS mark when getting points at Paul Brown Stadium.

Handicapper Matt Fargo won't be shocked if the Browns and Bengals stumble, "Cleveland and Cincinnati will bring up the rear with the Bengals being the biggest question because of the quarterback spot. There should not be many surprises in this division, but the Browns could surprise early with a bottom heavy schedule." The Browns host the Bengals, Dolphins, and Titans in the first month, while Cincinnati plays five non-playoff teams out of the gate before hosting Indianapolis in Week 6.
