    College Football Preview: Memphis

    MEMPHIS TIGERS

    2010 Statistics:
    SU Record: 1-11 (0-8 in C-USA)
    ATS Record: 5-7
    Over/Under: 6-6
    Points Scored: 14.4 PPG
    Points Allowed: 39.8 PPG
    2011 Odds:
Odds to Win C-USA East: 15/1
Odds to Win C-USA Championship: 75/1
Odds to Win 2012 BCS National Championship: 15/1 (Field)

    2011 Preview:
    Offense:
    Spread - Starters Returning: 7
Larry Porter’s first season in Memphis was abysmal, as his Tigers went 1-11 with the second-fewest points scored (14.4 PPG) and fourth-most points allowed (39.8 PPG) in the nation. The ground game averaged 2.9 yards per carry and the O-Line surrendered 37 sacks and 87 TFL. The one bright spot on offense is the productive duo of sophomore QB Ryan Williams (2,075 pass yds, 13 TD, 10 INT) and junior WR Marcus Rucker (41 rec, 704 yds, 8 TD).

    Defense:
    Base 43 - Starters Returning: 7
The defense only forced 13 turnovers (5 fumbles, 8 INT) with a paltry 14 sacks. The D-Line did stop the run fairly well (4.4 YPC) as DE Frank Trotter (80 tackles, 16.5 TFL) and 350-pound DT Dontari Poe (41 tackles, 6.5 TFL) were able to get penetration often. C-USA leading tackler Jamon Hughes is gone, but LBs Terrence Thomas (8.5 TFL) and DeRon Furr (58 tackles) are back. The secondary returns improving CBs Taurean Nixon and Mohammed Seisay.

    2011 Schedule:
Thu, Sept. 1 – Mississippi State
Sat, Sept. 10 – at Arkansas State
Sat, Sept. 17 – Austin Peay
    Sat, Sept. 24 – SMU
Sat, Oct. 1 – at Middle Tennessee State
Sat, Oct. 8 – at Rice
Sat, Oct. 15 – East Carolina
Sat, Oct. 22 – at Tulane
Sat, Oct. 29 – at UCF
    Sat, Nov. 12 – UAB
    Thu, Nov. 17 – Marshall
Sat, Nov. 26 – at Southern Miss

******* Take: The Tigers don’t figure to win many conference games, but they shouldn’t go winless in C-USA play, hosting the two other weakest C-USA East teams in UAB and Marshall. Memphis also avoids the top two schools in the West division in Houston and Tulsa. Assuming they can handle Austin Peay at home and also take care of business against MTSU in Murfreesboro, the Tigers figure to triple their win total from a year ago. Prediction: 3-9 record.

      College Football Preview: Rice

      RICE OWLS

      2010 Statistics:
      SU Record: 4-8 (3-5 in C-USA)
      ATS Record: 6-6
      Over/Under: 7-5
      Points Scored: 28.7 PPG
      Points Allowed: 38.5 PPG
      2011 Odds:
Odds to Win C-USA West: 8/1
Odds to Win C-USA Championship: 15/1
Odds to Win 2012 BCS National Championship: 15/1 (Field)

      2011 Preview:
      Offense:
Multiple Spread - Starters Returning: 7
Despite last year’s 4-8 record, there is still reason for optimism for the 2011 Rice Owls. QB Taylor McHargue posted quality numbers in five games as a freshman (63% comp. rate, 11 TD, 9 INT), and will likely start instead of senior Nick Fanuzzi. The ground game averaged 50 more YPG than it did in 2009, and should continue to improve with the entire O-Line returning to create holes for TB Sam McGuffie (883 rush yds, 384 rec yds, 9 total TD). TEs Vance McDonald (396 rec yds, 8 TD) and Luke Wilson (425 rec yds, 3 TD) are the team’s top receivers.

      Defense:
      4-2-5 - Starters Returning: 7
The defense is still a work in progress after ranking second-to-last in passing (304 YPG) and 114th in scoring (38.5 PPG). The Owls need to force the issue more, after a paltry 14-sack, 6-INT season. Improved line play is vital to help the secondary, which returns four starters, including Travis Bradshaw (76 tackles) and CB Phillip Gaines (6 PD).

      2011 Schedule:
Sat, Sept. 3 – at Texas
      Sat, Sept. 10 – Purdue
Sat, Sept. 24 – at Baylor
Sat, Oct. 1 – at Southern Miss
      Sat, Oct. 8 – Memphis
Sat, Oct. 15 – at Marshall
      Sat, Oct. 22 – Tulsa
Thu, Oct. 27 – at Houston
      Sat, Nov. 5 – UTEP
Sat, Nov. 12 – at Northwestern
      Sat, Nov. 19 – Tulane
Sat, Nov. 26 – at SMU

******* Take: The Owls take to the road seven times this year, and they figure to be significant underdogs in all road games, with the exception being Marshall. But they’ll host what should be the three worst teams in the conference in Memphis, UTEP and Tulane, allowing Rice to get halfway to bowl eligibility. But with two Big Ten and two Big 12 teams on the docket, the Owls will most likely be spectators during bowl season. Prediction: 4-8 record.

        College Football Preview: SMU

        SMU MUSTANGS

        2010 Statistics:
        SU Record: 7-7 (6-3 in C-USA)
        ATS Record: 6-8
        Over/Under: 6-8
        Points Scored: 25.7 PPG
        Points Allowed: 25.6 PPG
        2011 Odds:
Odds to Win C-USA West: 5/2
Odds to Win C-USA Championship: 11/2
Odds to Win 2012 BCS National Championship: 15/1 (Field)

        2011 Preview:
        Offense:
        Run-and-Shoot - Starters Returning: 6
June Jones’ run-and-shoot continues to work at SMU, as the Mustangs went 6-2 in C-USA play. Junior QB Kyle Padron (3,828 pass yds, 31 TD, 14 INT) is a rising star, but needs to help his team correct its minus-12 turnover margin. He’ll miss his outside threat Aldrick Robinson who had 1,301 yards and 14 TD in his final year, but two great inside receivers remain (Cole Beasley: 1,060 rec yds and Darius Johnson: 845 rec yds). The running game is also in good shape with TB Zach Line (1,494 rush yds, 6.1 YPC, 10 TD) running behind an all-senior O-line.

        Defense:
        Base 34 - Starters Returning: 7
Defensively, SMU was pretty sound. DEs Taylor Thompson (5.5 sacks) and Margus Hunt (45 tackles, 6.5 TFL) man the front line, while WLB Ja’Gared Davis (90 tackles, 9 sacks, 16 TFL) and MLB Taylor Reed (145 tackles) make plays all over the field. CB Richard Crawford (4 INT, 8 PD) is the best of the three returnees in the adequate secondary.

        2011 Schedule:
        Sun, Sept. 4 – at Texas A&M
        Sat, Sept. 10 – UTEP
Sat, Sept. 17 – Northwestern State
Sat, Sept. 24 – at Memphis
Fri, Sept. 30 – at TCU
        Sat, Oct. 15 – UCF
Sat, Oct. 22 – at Southern Miss
Sat, Oct. 29 – at Tulsa
        Sat, Nov. 5 – Tulane
        Sat, Nov. 12 – Navy
Sat, Nov. 19 – at Houston
        Sat, Nov. 26 – Rice

******* Take: The Mustangs should be able to win three of their first four games, but victories will be hard to come by the rest of the way, most notably the final four road games against national power TCU and the three best teams in Conference USA (Southern Miss, Tulsa and Houston). But despite the brutal schedule, the Mustangs have the offense and leadership to avoid a losing record for the season. Prediction: 6-6 record.

          College Football Preview: Tulsa

          TULSA GOLDEN HURRICANE

          2010 Statistics:
          SU Record: 10-3 (6-2 in C-USA)
          ATS Record: 9-4
          Over/Under: 6-6
          Points Scored: 41.4 PPG
          Points Allowed: 30.3 PPG
          2011 Odds:
Odds to Win C-USA West: 7/2
Odds to Win C-USA Championship: 7/1
Odds to Win 2012 BCS National Championship: 15/1 (Field)

          2011 Preview:
          Offense:
          Spread - Starters Returning: 8
Tulsa is out to prove it can beat anybody, scheduling road games at Oklahoma and Boise State, while hosting Oklahoma State. New head coach Bill Blankenship inherits a 10-3 team that averaged 45.9 PPG in winning its final seven games. Tulsa is led by two explosive seniors in QB G.J. Kinne (3,650 pass yds, 31 TD, 10 INT; 561 rush yds, 7 TD) and WR Damaris Johnson (872 rec yds, 560 rush yds, 13 total TD). The Golden Hurricane also return all five starting offensive linemen.

          Defense:
          3-3-5 - Starters Returning: 8
Tulsa led the nation with 24 interceptions and its +17 turnover margin was second among FBS schools. But it was also the nation’s worst pass defense (319 YPG) and ranked 85th in scoring (30.3 PPG). Many playmakers remain for new DC Brent Guy, including OLB Shawn Jackson (8.5 sacks), DE Tyrunn Walker (12 TFL), LB Curnelius Arnick (5 sacks), FS Dexter McCoil (6 INT) and WS Marco Nelson (6 INT).

          2011 Schedule:
Sat, Sept. 3 – at Oklahoma
Sat, Sept. 10 – at Tulane
Sat, Sept. 17 – Oklahoma State
Sat, Sept. 24 – at Boise State
Sat, Oct. 1 – North Texas
          Sat, Oct. 15 – UAB
Sat, Oct. 22 – at Rice
          Sat, Oct. 29 – SMU
Thu, Nov. 3 – at UCF
          Sat, Nov. 12 – Marshall
Sat, Nov. 19 – at UTEP
          Fri, Nov. 25 – Houston

******* Take: The Hurricane have arguably the toughest non-conference schedule in the land with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Boise State. But their C-USA slate is pretty manageable, with division contenders SMU and Houston at home, and the lack of C-USA East favorite Southern Miss on the schedule. This team represents pretty good value at 7-to-1 to win the conference championship. Prediction: 8-4 record.

            College Football Preview: Southern Mississippi

            SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI GOLDEN EAGLES

            2010 Statistics:
            SU Record: 8-5 (5-3 in C-USA)
            ATS Record: 6-7
            Over/Under: 9-3
            Points Scored: 36.9 PPG
            Points Allowed: 29.5 PPG
            2011 Odds:
Odds to Win C-USA East: 6/5
Odds to Win C-USA Championship: 5/2
Odds to Win 2012 BCS National Championship: 15/1 (Field)

            2011 Preview:
            Offense:
            Spread - Starters Returning: 6
Head coach Larry Fedora has all the pieces to earn a fourth bowl berth in his fourth season at Southern Miss. QB Austin Davis (3,103 pass yds, 20 TD, 6 INT; 452 rush yds, 10 TD) ran the spread offense brilliantly last year, ranking 15th in the county in scoring (36.9 PPG) and 18th in yardage (453 YPG). The Golden Eagles also return two top-notch TBs in Kendrick Hardy (903 rush yds, 6.5 YPC as freshman) and Desmond Johnson (611 rush yds, 5.3 YPC, 8 TD), as well as their top two receivers -- Kelvin Bolden (46 rec, 722 yds, 6 TD) and Quentin Pierce (38 rec, 454 yds, 4 TD).

            Defense:
            Base 43 - Starters Returning: 7
The defense did a great job stuffing the run (113 YPG, 13th in nation) behind DE Cordarro Law (6 sacks, 11.5 TFL) and MLB Korey Williams (93 tackles, 14.5 TFL). Sophomore CB Deron Wilson (3 INT, 12 PD) leads a subpar secondary that allowed 243 passing YPG (99th in nation) and lost two starters from last year’s team.

            2011 Schedule:
Sat, Sept. 3 – Louisiana Tech
Sat, Sept. 10 – at Marshall
Sat, Sept. 17 – Southeastern Louisiana
Sat, Sept. 24 – at Virginia
            Sat, Oct. 1 – Rice
Sat, Oct. 8 – at Navy
            Sat, Oct. 22 – SMU
Sat, Oct. 29 – at UTEP
Sat, Nov. 5 – at East Carolina
            Sat, Nov. 12 – UCF
Thu, Nov. 17 – at UAB
            Sat, Nov. 26 – Memphis

******* Take: Southern Miss is favored to win the East, and with good reason based on this easy conference schedule. The Eagles avoid the two best teams in the West (Houston and Tulsa) and play the next best C-USA teams (UCF and SMU) at home. The Eagles also have a shot to go unbeaten in their non-conference portion, considering Virginia and Navy are both breaking in new quarterbacks this year. Prediction: 10-2 record.

              College Football Preview: Tulane

              TULANE GREEN WAVE

              2010 Statistics:
              SU Record: 4-8 (2-6 in C-USA)
              ATS Record: 4-8
              Over/Under: 8-3
              Points Scored: 24.9 PPG
              Points Allowed: 37.2 PPG
              2011 Odds:
Odds to Win C-USA West: 8/1
Odds to Win C-USA Championship: 25/1
Odds to Win 2012 BCS National Championship: 15/1 (Field)

              2011 Preview:
              Offense:
              Multiple - Starters Returning: 7
Bob Toledo has a woeful 13-35 record in four seasons at Tulane. The ability of the Green Wave to improve starts with junior QB Ryan Griffin (2,371 pass yds, 14 TD, 8 INT) who averaged a mere 6.4 yards per pass attempt. Griffin would also benefit greatly if Tulane had more than one reliable receiver to complement junior Ryan Grant (33 rec, 515 yds, 4 TD). Tulane had trouble running the football (128 YPG, 91st in nation), but TB Orleans Darkwa (925 rush yds, 5.0 YPC, 11 TD) was not to blame. The O-line returns three starters and is improving.

              Defense:
              Base 43 - Starters Returning: 7
The defense allowed 37.2 PPG, including six games of 40+ points, and lost two key players in DT Justin Adams and CB Phillip Davis. DE Dezman Moses (6 sacks, 11.5 TFL) and MLB Trent Mackey (124 tackles, 7.5 TFL) will need a lot of help up front, and the secondary is also subpar.

              2011 Schedule:
Sat, Sept. 3 – Southeastern Louisiana
              Sat, Sept. 10 – Tulsa
Sat, Sept. 17 – at UAB
Sat, Sept. 24 – at Duke
Sat, Oct. 1 – at Army
              Sat, Oct. 8 – Syracuse
              Sat, Oct. 15 – UTEP
              Sat, Oct. 22 – Memphis
Sat, Oct. 29 – at East Carolina
Sat, Nov. 5 – at SMU
              Thu, Nov. 10 – Houston
Sat, Nov. 19 – at Rice
Sat, Nov. 26 – at Hawaii

******* Take: The Wave play 13 games during the regular season and their porous defense will be tested by non-conference opponents Duke, Syracuse and Hawaii. However, the C-USA schedule is rather favorable minus dates with C-USA East favorites Southern Miss and UCF. But wins will be hard to amass after a three-game homestand leaves Tulane with four road contests in its final five weeks. Prediction: 4-9 record.

                UTEP MINERS

                2010 Statistics:
                SU Record: 6-7 (3-5 in C-USA)
                ATS Record: 5-8
                Over/Under: 6-6
                Points Scored: 26.0 PPG
                Points Allowed: 27.5 PPG
                2011 Odds:
Odds to Win C-USA West: 8/1
Odds to Win C-USA Championship: 50/1
Odds to Win 2012 BCS National Championship: 15/1 (Field)

                2011 Preview:
                Offense:
                Spread - Starters Returning: 2
The Miners have a bunch of holes to fill on offense, including all five starting linemen and four-year starting QB Trevor Vittatoe. His replacement probably won’t be named until late August, but it will likely be senior Tate Smith or JUCO transfer Nick Lamaison. The QB’s progress will be hindered by the team’s lack of wideouts with 1,070-yard, 14-TD Kris Adams graduated. RB Joe Banyard (623 rush yds, 8 TD) is the key to the offense.

                Defense:
                Base 43 - Starters Returning: 9
Although the defense remains virtually intact, this unit was terrible last year, ranking 91st in yardage (413 YPG) T-105th in sacks (14) and 115th in TFL (50). DE Greg Watkins (3 sacks), LBs Isaiah Carter (75 tackles) and Jamie Irving (79 tackles), and CBs Travaun Nixon (4 INT) and Antwon Blake (11 PD) are the best returning defenders, with leading tackler S Wiston Jeune gone.

                2011 Schedule:
Sat, Sept. 3 – Stony Brook
Sat, Sept. 10 – at SMU
Sat, Sept. 17 – at New Mexico State
Sat, Sept. 24 – at South Florida
                Thu, Sept. 29 – Houston
Sat, Oct. 15 – at Tulane
Sat, Oct. 22 – Colorado State
Sat, Oct. 29 – Southern Miss
Sat, Nov. 5 – at Rice
Sat, Nov. 12 – East Carolina
                Sat, Nov. 19 – Tulsa
Fri, Nov. 25 – at UCF

******* Take: The Miners will have a tough time beating anybody in conference, as they play the three toughest teams in the East (Southern Miss, UCF, East Carolina) and don’t get the benefit of beating up on UAB, Marshall or Memphis. Other than Stony Brook, UTEP will likely be home underdogs in the other five games at the Sun Bowl in El Paso. Prediction: 4-8 record.

Odds to Win 2012 BCS National Championship: 15/1 (Field)

                  2011 Preview:
                  Offense:
                  Multiple - Starters Returning: 7
QB Jeff Godfrey looks to build on a solid freshman campaign (2,159 pass yds, 13 TD, 8 INT; 566 rush yds, 10 TD) for 11-3 UCF. The backfield is loaded with RB Ronnie Weaver (890 rush yds, 11 TD) and Brynn Harvey (1,109 rush yds, 14 TD in ‘09) returning from a knee injury. Head coach George O’Leary needs marked improvement from his receivers, especially speed burner Quincy McDuffie (13 rec, 144 yds, 2 TD; 32.2 kick return avg.) and A.J. Guyton (28 rec, 353 yds, 3 TD).

                  Defense:
                  Base 43 - Starters Returning: 4
UCF’s defense lost a good chunk of players from a unit that was eighth in the nation in points (17.1 PPG) and 15th in yardage (315 YPG). The school’s all-time sack leader, Bruce Miller, is gone, but DE Darius Nall (8.5 sacks) is back, with fellow DE Troy Davis (5.5 sacks) poised for a monster season, after five sacks in the spring game. The linebacker corps lacks experience with freshman Leilon Willingham, converted RB Jonathan Davis and basketball player Ray Shipman. CB Josh Robinson (13 PD) and FS Kemal Ishmael (93 tackles, 5 PD) lead a quality secondary.

                  2011 Schedule:
Sat, Sept. 3 – Charleston Southern
Sat, Sept. 10 – Boston College
Sat, Sept. 17 – at Florida International
Fri, Sept. 23 – at BYU
                  Sat, Oct. 8 – Marshall
Sat, Oct. 15 – at SMU
Thu, Oct. 20 – at UAB
                  Sat, Oct. 29 – Memphis
                  Thu, Nov. 3 – Tulsa
Sat, Nov. 12 – at Southern Miss
Sat, Nov. 19 – at East Carolina
                  Fri, Nov. 25 – UTEP

******* Take: The Knights have a difficult road to repeating as conference champs, playing both of the other two East contenders (Southern Miss and East Carolina) on the road. They catch a break not having C-USA favorite Houston on the schedule, but playing at SMU is no easy task. Non-conference opponents B.C. and BYU are no pushovers either. Don’t bank on UCF getting back to the conference title game. Prediction: 8-4 record.

                    UAB BLAZERS

                    2010 Statistics:
                    SU Record: 4-8 (3-5 in C-USA)
                    ATS Record: 5-7
                    Over/Under: 6-6
                    Points Scored: 26.3 PPG
                    Points Allowed: 31.6 PPG
                    2011 Odds:
Odds to Win C-USA East: 5/2
Odds to Win C-USA Championship: 19/2
Odds to Win 2012 BCS National Championship: 15/1 (Field)

                    2011 Preview:
                    Offense:
                    Spread - Starters Returning: 7
Head coach Neil Callaway needs to improve his 15-33 record at UAB, and he has a good enough offense to be competitive in C-USA. QB Bryan Ellis (2,940 pass yds, 25 TD, 12 INT) and RB Pat Shed (1,318 yds from scrimmage, 5.4 YPC, 7 total TD) are both coming off great seasons. The duo also has the benefit of a sound offensive line that returns four starters to a unit that allowed a mere 12 sacks last season (T-12th in nation). The receivers are serviceable with junior Patrick Hearn (536 rec yds, 4 TD) the best of the lot.

                    Defense:
                    Base 43 - Starters Returning: 8
The defense had its deficiencies last year (31.6 PPG, 95th in nation), and the mediocre pass rush was weakened by the loss of DE Bryant Turner and his 6.5 sacks. But most of the unit is back, including run-stuffing DT Elliott Henigan (55 tackles, 15.5 TFL) and junior LBs Marvin Burdette (114 tackles) and Daniel White (55 tackles). Three starting senior DBs return to try to improve the team’s 105th-ranked pass defense (248 YPG) -- CB T.J. Ballou (3 INT), S Jamie Bender (94 tackles, 9 PD) and CB Marquis Coleman (7 PD).

                    2011 Schedule:
Sat, Sept. 10 – at Florida
                    Sat, Sept. 17 – Tulane
Sat, Sept. 24 – at East Carolina
Sat, Oct. 1 – at Troy
Sat, Oct. 8 – Mississippi State
Sat, Oct. 15 – at Tulsa
                    Thu, Oct. 20 – UCF
Sat, Oct. 29 – at Marshall
                    Sat, Nov. 5 – Houston
Sat, Nov. 12 – at Memphis
Thu, Nov. 17 – Southern Miss
Sat, Nov. 26 – at Florida Atlantic

******* Take: The Blazers receive an extra week of practice before the season, but they don’t get a bye week at all during the year. They will be underdogs against three very good non-conference opponents (Florida, Troy, Mississippi State) and have to play the two best teams in the C-USA West in Houston and Tulsa. UAB hasn’t played in a bowl since 2004, and that skid will likely remain intact with another losing campaign in 2011. Prediction: 4-8 record.

                          College Football Preview: Notre Dame

                          NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH

                          2010 Statistics:
                          SU Record: 8-5
                          ATS Record: 6-4-3
                          Over/Under: 4-9
                          Points Scored: 26.3 PPG
                          Points Allowed: 20.2 PPG
                          2011 Odds:
Odds to Win 2012 BCS National Championship: 30/1
WR Michael Floyd Odds to Win Heisman: 25/1

                          2011 Preview:
                          Offense:
                          Spread - Starters Returning: 8
A 7-2 finish to 2010 gives the Irish momentum for 2011. QB Dayne Crist (2,033 pass yds, 15 TD, 7 INT) should be fully healed from his ruptured patella tendon, and it appears suspended WR Michael Floyd (79 rec, 1,025 yds, 12 TD) will be re-instated in August. Floyd, the school’s all-time leader in TD receptions (28), was arrested in March for driving with a 0.19 blood alcohol level. He was suspended by coach Brian Kelly and received one year of probation after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of drunken driving. TB Cierre Wood (603 rush yds) should flourish behind a solid O-Line.

                          Defense:
                          Base 34 - Starters Returning: 8
The D-Line needs work, but the LBs are excellent, especially ILB Manti Te’o (133 tackles, 9.5 TFL) and OLB Darius Fleming (5.5 sacks). The secondary loses ball-hawking S Harrison Smith (7 INT).

                          2011 Schedule:
Sat, Sept. 3 – South Florida
Sat, Sept. 10 – at Michigan
Sat, Sept. 17 – Michigan State
Sat, Sept. 24 – at Pittsburgh
Sat, Oct. 1 – at Purdue
Sat, Oct. 8 – Air Force
                          Sat, Oct. 22 – USC
                          Sat, Oct. 29 – Navy
Sat, Nov. 5 – at Wake Forest
Sat, Nov. 12 – vs. Maryland (in Landover, MD)
Sat, Nov. 19 – Boston College
Sat, Nov. 26 – at Stanford

******* Take: The Irish, per usual, have a very difficult schedule. They could easily begin the season 1-3 with trips to Michigan and Pittsburgh sandwiched around a home game with Big Ten power Michigan State. But they have a chance to put together a lengthy win streak with just two road contests during a seven-game span starting in October. Notre Dame will most likely lose its season finale at Stanford, which should be one of the five best teams in the nation. Assuming Michael Floyd is reinstated and plays the entire season, Notre Dame will go bowling again. Prediction: 8-4 record.

                                College Football Preview: Navy

                                NAVY MIDSHIPMEN

                                2010 Statistics:
                                SU Record: 9-4
                                ATS Record: 7-6
                                Over/Under: 6-6
                                Points Scored: 29.7 PPG
                                Points Allowed: 23.3 PPG
                                2011 Odds:
Odds to Win 2012 BCS National Championship: 15/1 (Field)

                                2011 Preview:
                                Offense:
Triple Option - Starters Returning: 8
Ricky Dobbs used up his eligibility, leaving the starting QB job to Kriss Proctor (304 rush yds, 9.5 YPC, 9 career pass attempts). Navy’s triple option led to 285 rush YPG (6th in nation), and could be better this year with a loaded backfield led by FB Alexander Teich (863 rush yds, 5.9 YPC, 7 total TD) and SB Gee Gee Greene (492 rush yds, 6.8 YPC).

                                Defense:
                                Base 34 - Starters Returning: 3
The defense lost nearly all of its starters, so the unit will have to build around monster DE Jabaree Tuani (72 tackles, 15.5 TFL, 5.5 sacks) and CB Kwesi Mitchell (48 tackles, 3 FF).

                                2011 Schedule:
                                Sat, Sept. 3 – Delaware
Sat, Sept. 10 – at Western Kentucky
Sat, Sept. 17 – at South Carolina
Sat, Oct. 1 – Air Force
Sat, Oct. 8 – Southern Miss
Sat, Oct. 15 – at Rutgers
Sat, Oct. 22 – East Carolina
Sat, Oct. 29 – at Notre Dame
                                Sat, Nov. 5 – Troy
Sat, Nov. 12 – at SMU
Sat, Nov. 19 – at San Jose State
Sat, Dec. 10 – vs. Army (in Landover, MD)

******* Take: The Midshipmen don’t have many easy games on the schedule after Week 2. Road trips to nationally-ranked South Carolina and Notre Dame are almost-certain defeats, and they play three of the better teams in Conference USA in Southern Miss, East Carolina and SMU. Assuming Navy’s defense matures throughout the season, it should be able to get enough wins to go bowling. Prediction: 6-6 record.
