Sooner head coach Bob Stoops had some fun with Oklahoma’s rivals Tuesday.
Walking past a few reporters following OU’s pro day, Stoops said, “You see we got another championship banner up?
“It’s not a South Division one, either.”
The comment was a perceived jab at Oklahoma State — and possibly one at Texas, too.
OSU recently ordered Big 12 South champion rings for its players, even though the Cowboys didn’t represent the South in the Big 12 Championship. Quarterback Brandon Weeden even posted a picture of the ring on his Twitter page.
OSU tied for the South title with Texas A&M and OU, but the Sooners earned the tiebreaker after defeating the Pokes in Stillwater, 47-41, the last game of the regular season. OU went on to beat Nebraska for the Big 12 title.
Later on Tuesday, Sooner safety Tony Jefferson took a dig at Weeden on Twitter.
“Love how @bweeden3 posted that pic of Big 12 ring,” Jefferson wrote. “Didnt win that bud. #sorrypokes.”
In 2008, OU also represented the Big 12 South, winning the three-way tiebreaker over Texas and Texas Tech.
But on a wall in its Moncrief-Neuhaus training facility, Texas listed “2008” with its Big 12 South titles, and “2008” with an asterisk among its Big 12 championships.
The Longhorns eventually removed the “2008*” from the wall.
