No more sudden death: New OT rules in effect
    CBSSports.com wire reports
    Jan. 6, 2011
NEW YORK -- As if NFL coaches needed something else to worry about.

When the playoffs begin this weekend, they will feature a new rule for overtime. That field goal to win the game on the opening series of the extra session? Forget it.

If a team wins the coin toss and receives the overtime kickoff, it does not automatically win the game if it kicks a field goal. The team that kicked off then gets a possession.

If the trailing team also kicks a field goal, the game continues. If it scores a touchdown, it wins. And if it does not get any points, it loses.

you know one game will come down to OT and this will be a factor. IMO they shouldnt have changed the rule just for post season. either do it throughout or not at all.

article says that if it goes as expected that the change will become official for regular season as well...........there will be some long games if this is the case because field goal kickers are hitting from 50 regularly these days and if they are putting up 3s, then could have triple ot next season..........

If each team scores on a field goal then it becomes sudden death, any score wins.

Gotta go for the td's everytime, field goals are too risky, even if you make one you can still lose.

            I am a little confused.
What if the team which gets the ball first in overtime scores a touchdown rather than a field goal-does the other team get a chance to match it also, etc.?

If team receives and scores a TD, they win

If both teams kick field goals after their first possession, who gets the ball next? Is their another coin toss? Does the winner of the first coin toss get it first again? If so, that seems unfair. I'm not sure I like this.

Kick off to the first team that scored, after a FG each any score wins.
If they want fair they should just give each team the Lombardi trophy and not even play the game....
