Tony Romo unlikely returning to Cowboys

The Cowboys (5-9) had hoped starter Tony Romo would heal quickly enough from a broken collarbone suffered Oct. 25 to return to play Saturday at Arizona (4-10), but signs point to Jon Kitna starting that one as well as the finale at Philadelphia on Jan. 2. “We’ll just have to see how he feels,” interim coach Jason Garrett said Monday when asked about Romo. “You want to see any player feel comfortable practicing before you put them in a game regardless of their experience.” The non-committal answer came less than 24 hours after owner Jerry Jones flatly said Romo isn’t ready yet to play. “That doesn’t mean he might not get out there, throw and practice,” Jones added. — San Antonio Express-News

Kitna satisfied with being Cowboys backup, but shows he can be more

During the 45 minutes the media is conducting interviews in the locker room on weekdays, Jon Kitna is often mingling with teammates, exchanging laughs and good-natured barbs, playing cards or, during idle moments, sitting on one of the overstuffed sofas and simply taking it all in.
He is as cooperative as any member of the team, patiently answering questions from reporters and making himself available for interviews almost every day.
In contrast, Tony Romo, when healthy, seldom is in the locker room during media access. He talks to the media once a week for as little as four and rarely more than 10 minutes.
He's always friendly and smiling, but his answers to questions often seem calculated and rehearsed. He's quieter and much less engaging than Kitna.
At least during the time the media is conducting interviews, Romo does not come across as "one of the guys."
Nothing wrong with that. Different players, different personalities, different approaches.
But Romo has to be aware that besides the contrasts in locker room demeanor, Kitna has done something Romo did not do this season.
Romo won one game; Kitna has won four.
Combine Kitna's outgoing personality with his on-field performance and the argument can be made that the Dallas Cowboys have become Jon Kitna's team.
Appearances, however, are deceiving for two reasons:
1. The Cowboys are committed to Romo.
"Tony Romo is our starting quarterback," interim coach Jason Garrett said.
2. Kitna forcefully dismisses the notion of a quarterback controversy. Perhaps it would be different with a 30-year-old Kitna. But Kitna is 38.
