  • Jets coach trips Dolphins player during game

We know that the New York Jets are a team that likes to be loud and proud about their exploits. They're a team with a lot of swagger even when things are not going well, which they haven't been of late. Less than a week after losing 45-3 to the New England Patriots on Monday Night football, Rex Ryan's bunch lost 10-6 to the Miami Dolphins, and did so in a much more embarrassing fashion.

What, you say? How can a four-point deficit be worse than a 42-point beatdown? Because at least in the Patriots game, nobody on the Jets' sideline did anything rotten like this:

This play happened with 2:58 left in the third quarter, when the Dolphins punted to Jets receiver Santonio Holmes(notes). As Holmes took the ball for a short return, cornerback Nolan Carroll(notes) was hurt on the right sideline as he rushed down to cover the play. The replay showed strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi extending his knee just enough to trip Carroll up on the play. Carroll was down for a minute, but returned to play later in the game.

Jeff Darlington of the Miami Herald got post-game reaction from three Dolphins players -- Carroll, linebacker Karlos Dansby(notes) and Channing Crowder(notes).

"That needs to be on 'C'mon, Man!' on Monday night," Dansby said, speaking of the ESPN Monday Night Countdown crew's weekly salute to the game's biggest boneheads. "Freeze-frame it, and that's No. 1 by far."

"They do what they do," Crowder said. "They cheat and they talk junk and do all that stuff, but we beat the hell out of them today, so they can trip all the people they want to. I'll tell 'em to trip me -- I would have broken that old man's leg."

"I'm not angry," Carroll said. "It's not my problem; it's the Jets' problem. We just move on."

Alosi had this to say in a statement:

"I made a mistake that showed a total lapse in judgment. My conduct was inexcusable and unsportsmanlike and does not reflect what this organization stands for. I spoke to Coach Sparano and Nolan Carroll to apologize before they took off. I have also apologized to [Jets owner] Woody [Johnson], [Jets general manager] Mike [Tannebaum] and Rex [Ryan]. I accept responsibility for my actions as well as any punishment that follows."

The league is likely to come down hard on Alosi, if for no other reason than to prevent others from getting a goofball notion and doing the same thing. We suspect that even if Alosi doesn't lose his job, he's probably going to be very light in the wallet and he may be spending some time away from the team facility.

I think this guy gets axed and his coaching career is over.
You work hard all your life to be in the position you are in only to ruin it with a split second misjudgment...or split second stupid act..

He should have been fired on the spot. For him to still have a job reflects badly on organization....

When did the jets start worrying about what others thought of them. Look at their coach.

I agree Bryce. Watching Rex Ryan this year shows you why Steve Bischotti, owner of the Ravens, didn't want to hire Rex as Ravens head coach and instead hired Harbaugh. Ryan is a complete asshole.

Classless act. I really may have to re-think being a fan if he is not fired

"I wish they'd tripped me. I'd have broken that old man's leg."

                            -- Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder

Sal Alosi, Jets Assistant, Apologizes for Tripping Dolphins' Nolan Carroll

Jets assistant Sal Alosi admitted to tripping Dolphins cornerback/kick returner Nolan Carroll and apologized for his "inexcusable and unsportsmanlike" conduct in Sunday's loss.

"I made a mistake that showed a total lapse in judgment. My conduct was inexcusable and unsportsmanlike and does not reflect what this organization stands for," Alosi said in a statement. "I accept responsibility for my actions as well as any punishment that follows."

Alosi, in his fourth season as the Jets' head strength and conditioning coach, stuck his knee out and tripped Carroll on a Jets punt return with 2:58 left in the third quarter. As Carroll ran down the sideline to defend the return by Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes, he was hurt when Alosi appeared to intentionally extend his knee to stop Carroll in his tracks. Carroll remained down for a minute on the field but later would return to the game.

Alosi, at minimum, likely faces a fine for his actions and could be suspended. New York Daily News beat writer Manish Mehta reported that the Jets are reviewing the matter and looking into the appropriate next step for Alosi, according to a team spokesman. Alosi said he also apologized to Carroll and Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano before Miami left.

Sparano said he would be sending tape of the incident to the league.

"I don't know what else can be done," Sparano said. "There was a player down on the sideline and that's not good. We're trying to take care of players in this game."

Dolphins linebacker Karlos Dansby pulled no punches when he was told about the trip and shown a photo of it on a cell phone. "He kneed him? Are you serious? He's just taking after the head coach, man. It all trickles downhill," Dansby said. "That's how I look at it, it trickles downhill. The head coach, he opened a can of worms over there and now he's got to fix it."

Dansby added "there's no place for that in football" and asked commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend Alosi for the incident. "That is so dirty. ... Come on man. Goodell, handle this. That's sad. Suspend (Alosi). He's gotta go. He's bringing the whole organization down."

Fellow linebacker Channing Crowder offered an even harsher assessment of the incident. "They're cheaters," Crowder said. "They do what they do. They cheat. They talk junk. But we beat the hell out of them today, so they can trip all the people they want to. I wish they'd tripped me. I'd have broken that old man's leg."

For his part, Carroll said he didn't know how he went down and that he would have to watch the film. "I'm not angry. I mean, we got a (win). That's not my problem. It's the Jets' problem. We just move on."
