Denver Broncos wide receiver Kenny McKinley, a fifth-round pick in the 2009 National Football League draft, was found dead today at the age of 23.
The Broncos said they had no additional information to share on McKinley’s death other than statements from owner Pat Bowlen and coach Josh McDaniels.
“Kenny had a promising future on the football field but, more importantly, he was a great teammate whose smile and personality could light up the room,” McDaniels said. “This is a tragic loss for our football team and his family is in all of our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
McKinley, who was placed on injured reserve last month with a season-ending knee problem, is the third Broncos player to die in four years. Cornerback Darrent Williams was killed in a drive-by shooting while leaving a party on Jan. 1, 2007, while linebacker Damien Nash collapsed and died two months later while playing in a charity basketball game.

McKinley's short NFL career failed to live up to his college success. He played in just 8 games his rookie year, primarily as a special teams player. He went on injured reserve in the second to last game of the 2009-10 season, when he hurt his knee.
He came back for training camp this season, but hurt himself again to wind up on the IR once more. According the the Denver Post, the second trip to injured reserve was incredibly hard on him. But there was little indication that anything was seriously wrong with McKinley's psyche.
Regardless of what is learned of McKinley's last days in the weeks to come, this is a terrible tragedy. He will be missed.
