Cubs Tyler Colvin hospitalized after being impaled with piece of broken bat
Chicago Cubs rookie outfielder Tyler Colvin has been hospitalized after being struck in the chest by a piece of a broken bat.Colvin was on third base in the second inning of the Cube' game against the Marlins when a piece of Wellington Castro's bat punctured his chest on Sunday.
Castro doubled on the play and Colvin scored but was replaced in the field in the bottom half of the inning.
Colvin was reported in stable condition at Ryder Trauma Center of Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami with minimal external bleeding. But the incident raised new concerns about the integrity of bats being used.
Pieces of broken bats have been flying for several years, causing injuries to fans, coaches and players. It was unknown if Castro was using a maple bat, which has come under particular scrutiny.
In 2009, baseball said it was getting a handle on the situation, detailing fewer broken-bat incidents. Thirteen months ago, inspection of the wood used in the manufacturing of maple and ash bats led MLB to conclude that it had reduced the number of bats shattering and the potential for injury to fans, players, coaches and umpires.
