I must say that over the years I despised him at times because I regarded him as one of the instigators of trying to buy the WS.
That said, my anger directed toward him lessened as I saw many other teams including the Sox essentially do the same thing which one might regard as the simple evolution from baseball to a sport to a business.
I am saddened by his loss today because in retrospect he strove for excellence for his team and for the fans.
      He will be missed-RIP

Well said savage. I felt the same way. I used to say Steinbrenner ruined baseball and tried to buy a championship but in retrospect I learned to appreciate him as an owner who played within the rules and did everything he could to put the best team possible on the field for all fans. If only Peter Angelos was half the owner Steinbrenner was the Orioles wouldn't be the laughing stock of baseball. RIP Boss.

It's an end of an era in baseball ownership. An owner whom respected his team. In my opinion only Jerry Jones and Al Davis is left as old school owners....

Good post savvy ... I also disliked him back in the days when he was buying the WS ... But I always wished he was the owner of the Cubs .... Things sure would have been different here in Chicago ... either you won or you were out ... no bs with him ... no excuses ... if you did not produce, here is the door ...

                RIP George

The Cubs are so corporate... They are making the bottom line with revenues so who cares if they don't win... The ownership does not show any fire or passion in winning. The Raiders is a joke but like it or not you know that the Raiders is AL Davis team....

Correct me if I a wrong but I watched NBC Nightly News tongiht and Steinbrenner's death wasn't talked about until the last two or three minutes of the 30 minute program.
On the other hand, on ESPN virtually nothing else was talked about from the time of his death until this evening.
Personally, I think the story of his death should have been talked about on the news during the first 5 minutes or certainly no later than the first 10 minutes of the news.
