Cavs owner: LeBron quit during playoffs

CLEVELAND -- Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert says LeBron James "quit" during the playoffs and should be accountable for his actions.

Gilbert, who posted a letter to Cavs fans on the team's website shortly after James announced he plans to sign with Miami, tells The Associated Press late Thursday night that he feels "personally betrayed" by James and that it's "accountability time."

In a phone interview with the AP, Gilbert says "people have covered up for [James] for way too long. Tonight we saw who he really is."

Gilbert says James quit on the Cavs during their second-round series against the Boston Celtics, who rallied from a 2-1 deficit to eliminate Cleveland.

Open Letter to Fans from Cavaliers Majority Owner Dan Gilbert

    Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE"

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

    Just watch.

    Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day....

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue....

    Dan Gilbert
    Majority Owner
    Cleveland Cavaliers

        Can you say sour grapes?

Give me a f'ing break. Cleveland was a shit organization before Lebron got there and they'll be a shit organization from here on out.

Where is this d'bag thanking Lebron for making the Cavs relevant for once?

BTW, if Lebron stays in Cleveland, does this d'bag spout off like this? Nope

So if Lebron resigns with Cleveland, the owner is willing to put up with the same guy he's ripping here? Yea, that's logical.

I agree with the passion but balls would have been for him to say this two weeks ago.Now that Lebron is leaving he wants to bring all this up.If he really felt that way about Lebron why would he even try to keep him in Cleveland? Can you guys imagine the hype that will be built up when Miami plays at Cleveland now.

                Greek,

Where did you get this? Do you have it confirmed it was really from him? Maybe its been all over the radio/tv, I don't know, I've intentionally stayed away from sports talk since about 8:30pm (cst) last night.....but this really doesn't seem like something a "professional" owner would write. Honestly, it really seems like something a bitter, jealous, 12yr old might write. Just wondering if you know if its real or not???

I agree it is odd. I mean would he have written these things if he re signed? This is the same guy he was ready to give 130 million to. I understand feeling burned big time, but either he is a good guy you want to throw millions at or he is a bad guy like in letter. A bit two-faced imo.

Sour grapes, but I understand the dude, he is hurt and pissed and he simply is letting it out.

This is why i dont have a passion anymore for sports, you put your heart into it and the athletes dont care about anything but themselves, so why should you care anymore than the players.

If they dont care, then why should I, I am not even getting paid.

As far as Miami winning a title, UK had 5 first round NBA draft picks and couldnt make the final 4, fucking pro team already and couldnt beat WVU. Wade, Bosch, and James are no different, probably will never win one either.
