JEFFERSON CITY — A bill that would strip Mark McGwire's name from part of Interstate 70 is headed to Gov. Jay Nixon's desk.
Lawmakers named a six-mile stretch of I-70 in St. Louis "Mark McGwire Highway" after the Cardinal slugger's 70-home run season in 1998. If the bill becomes law, the section would carry the name of Missouri's most famous author, Mark Twain. When the highway was built in the 1950s, it was named for Twain.
McGwire retired from the Cardinals after the 2001 season with 583 career home runs. He rejoined the team before this season as hitting coach.
When McGwire was called before Congress in 2005, he refused to talk about whether he had ever used performance-enhancing drugs. But in January, McGwire acknowledged that he had used steroids during his playing career.
As allegations arose about McGwire's steroid use, many in the city soured on the stretch of highway that bore his name.
The bill also names sections of several other highways after famous Missouri residents.
Part of Lindbergh Boulevard would be named for Dave Sinclair, longtime Ford dealer who died Sept. 25. The bill also names a portion of Interstate 44 for Missouri Highway Patrol Cpl. Dennis Engelhard, 49, who was killed in an accident on Christmas Day last year in Eureka.
The bill is HB1941.
