P90X is half and half. Half resistance and half cardio. The resistance workouts won't give you big bulky body builder muscles. It will slightly increase muscle bulk while toning the muscles.
After I finish P90X I'm going to do a P90X/Insanity Hybrid workout. I'll use P90X for the weight/resistance training and Insanity for the cardio. Initially, my plan was to do Insanity after P90X but I don't want to give up the weight training.

ANY program will work if you follow it
p90x-q91y-i dont give a shit what it is
it has to be comprehensive(full body in nature)
progressive(increase weight/reps each workout)
time efficent(under 60 minutes
and if fat loss is the objective(a nutrition plan must be included)
that is it guys
buy the book "body by science" and it will explain all of it to you
also books by ellington darden are great resources
hope it helps

I noticed a few peeps in here mentioned INSANITY so I figured I would add my 2 cents.
Granted I was/am in terrible shape when I started INSANITY 2 weeks ago, I did play CFB and was a boxer as well so I have a good idea regarding what makes a "tough" workout.
INSANITY is hands down the toughest workout I've ever done. I saw the notions that you shouldn't start it unless you're already in decent shape, but I said fuck it. Well, I wish I would've listened...lol. In all seriousness though, I would recommend doing P90x or something similar and then moving on to INSANITY. I've completed the workouts as scheduled, but during most of them, I've had to take breaks and I had to stop the 2nd one with 8 minutes left because I thought I was gonna pass out.
Anyway, think long and hard before you start INSANITY cuz it's no joke.

I highly recommend P90X first. Invest $100 on pull up bars and depending on your level of fitness and strength a few sets of dumbbells. Maybe 10, 15 and 20 to start. You can often buy them used.
You can buy the pull up bars online for $30. My local Play it Again Sports sells used dumbbells at 62 cents/pound. The pullup bars and weights I recommended will cost less than $100. As you progress through P90X you can add additional weights and push up bars.

Classic is the version I described above. Doubles is the same as classic plus there's 3 days of double workouts. The normal P90X routine and an additional Cardio workout.
Lean has only 2 days of resistance training per week.
Also, instead of weights one can use Resistance Bands.
