  • Tomlinson signs 2-year deal with Jets

NEW YORK -- The Jets have signed running back LaDainian Tomlinson to a two-year contract, adding an aging star to an offense that ranked No. 1 in rushing last season

Tomlinson's agent, Tom Condon, confirmed the deal Sunday night.

"He wanted to go a team that he thought had a chance to compete for the championship," Condon told the AP. "He wanted to go somehwere where he had a chance to have a significant role, and so with the Jets he also was going to be very familiar with the offensive system."

The Jets reached the AFC Championship Game last season, eliminating Tomlinson and the Chargers along the way.

Tomlinson spent Friday with the Jets, capping it with dinner with coach Rex Ryan, general manager Mike Tannenbaum and other team officials.

The 2006 NFL MVP was cut last month by San Diego. He chose New York over Minnesota after visiting the Vikings on Thursday.

The Jets went after Tomlinson hard even though he turns 31 in June and is coming off his least productive season.

Tomlinson ran for 730 yards and 3.3 per carry. He scored 12 touchdowns.

He's expected to back up Shonn Greene, who became the starter after leading-rusher Thomas Jones was released last week.

Tomlinson ranks eighth on the NFL's career rushing list with 12,490 yards.

Good---not a Jets fan but glad to see he went with a contender--IMO I think he deserves that much

I know it's popular now to hate on L.T. because of his declining numbers, but I think he still has a lot left in the tank, and so do a lot of others here in San Diego. We didn't want to see him go to an AFC team, and if they end up seeing each other again in the playoffs, it is going to be very interesting in this city. Tomlinson knows the offense that Brian Schottenheimer is running and knows that Greene is still unproven over a 16 game stretch and Washington still has to prove he is fully recovered from his leg injury. The Jets run the ball more than any other team, so I expect L.T. to get a few series each game plus a lot of 3rd down work. The dude caught over 100 balls out of the backfield a few years ago, and I'm betting that he is going to become a nice weapon for Sanchez.

I love LT. He was a great player but hey, i have no faith in him out running anybody anymore and he seems to get dinged up very easily these days. They say when a RB loses it, it happens quickly and after watching him the last 2 years, he is pretty much DONE!

Guys - the numbers are down because of how the offense has developed under Norv. They are a passing team and they couldn't run even if they wanted to with a patchwork line and no true fullback. If L.T. had Lorenzo Neal blocking for him the last 2 years with 25 carries a game, he'd still be a top 10 RB.

I guess only time will tell now....it will be hard to see him wearing green but I'm still rooting for him to prove all the doubters wrong.

Then why did Sproles look like he had a burst out of the backfield when LT didn't. Sproles could break the big one and from what i seen, LT couldn't. Same line and offense for both.

I don't know man, even in the passing game, LT used to be money on those screens. Once he broke free, you just couldn't catch him. He just never had that ability at all this year in any game that i watched him in.

You should be on a stage with a microphone with comedy like that!

The QB is the heartbeat of a team and you are NOT a complete team when your QB is 28th in the League in QB Rating and 29th in the League in Completion %, behind guys like Brady Quinn, Josh Freeman and Ryan Fitzpatrick. Sorry, that ain't a "Complete" team. Maybe if he improves on that but until he does, not!

Even Dilfer was 20th and 17th the year they won with nothing but defense.

Besides, RB's were anything BUT the problem last year. They were the No. 1 rushing team in football. You lose T. Jones and add Tomlinson and now they are a complete team? Makes no sense. The QB held them back last year, not the RB's!

He proved throughout the playoffs that he can manage a game, and truthfully that's all he has to do.

With Washington's injury and losing Thomas Jones, Jets were down to one real RB. Runningbacks not an off season concern? Think you're wrong.
