if they do that with 5 minute power plays, then why don't they let them play through the whole 2 minutes on the lesser penalties (assuming a goal is scored)?
good question, i don't think there is a real answer other than it's one heck of a physical game and it's on ice, i guess you gotta expect some sticks and skates to get tangled up along the way.
holding, hooking, those calls are like holding in football, it can be called on almost every play...but it's not.
I'm pretty sure the big difference is a minor is considered accidental or not meant to hurt or injure the player a major is almost always something like your intentionally trying to hurt or injure the other player. If it's a direct attempt to injure (if the puck is no where near the player) it's called a "match" penalty, and those are 10 min game misconducts. The player is ejected and you get the 5 min power play. Those are blatent attempts to take out a player though.

When you think about it, no other major sport (Baseball, basketball, football) makes you play shorthanded for any amount of time after a foul or penalty, so hockey is still very unique in that way i guess.
I think only for a fighting major. I know you get ejected in the Olympics for fighting. That's why we probably havn't seen any.
5 for fighting does not get you ejected in the NHL, sometimes a guy will get into 2 fights in 1 game, then they will send you off.
Not only for fighting wayne, that's what i'm trying to say, last night the guy from norway i think Tollefsen ? went for a shoulder to shoulder check, and the guy landed on his head and was bleeding...Tollefsen was ejected and slovakia got a 5 min PP.

Ya', all i know or heard is that you get ejected in the Olympics for fighting and that was a big difference from the NHL. Maybe a major that draws blood in the Olympics gets you ejected too? Or maybe everything over a 2 minute penalty gets you ejected? That would be a little harsh i guess ....
