Was this a good trade? Remember I don't follow hockey. The amount of goals that he scored looks pretty damn impressive over his career.

BC, no doubt that New Jersey got the best player in this deal in Kovalchuk.

New Jersey made this trade because they want to win the Stanley Cup this year (they know their goaltender Martin Brodeur is not getting any younger)

The problem is that they gave up some very promising young talent, high draft picks, and Kovalchuk is only a rental player. He becomes an unrestricted free agent at seasons end, which means they will most likely loose him..for nothing!

But Lou Lamoriello is not a stupid GM (he has won 3 stanley cups with new jersey) and if he feels this was the last piece of the puzzle for them to win the cup this year, I have to respect him. He is a winner!
