  • DE Freeney has torn ligament in ankle

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Colts RE Dwight Freeney has a torn ligament in his injured right ankle.

The injury "will make it difficult for him to play" in Super Bowl XLIV, according to Schefter. This confirms a Profootballtalk report that Freeney's injury is more serious than the team has let on. Missing Freeney, even if it's for just a few less snaps than usual, would be detrimental to Indy's Super Bowl chances.

We'll see if he really doesn't play, I'd be pretty surprised.

He will take a pain shot, wear a brace and play IMO.

Yea he'll play, but he could really mess up his ankle if it's truly torn, pain shots don't really work on tears.

no chance he has the same burst.....might be more of a liability than his backup if he guts it out.

I think he plays even if to decoy and pull some double teams.

I wouldn't see the point of being a decoy. If he is truly hurt it is going to be rather obvious after the first few plays of the Saints' first series and then they will just leave him singled up.

Depends on how bad of a tear it is on whether or not he plays. If he plays they will come at him as they should and come at him hard.

Colts RE Dwight Freeney (ankle) acknowledged at Tuesday's Super Bowl Media Day that he will not be able to practice before Sunday's game.

"Hopefully, towards the end of the week it starts to get better," he said. "The decision (of whether he'll play) will come later on. It's kind of early now." It's worth noting that NFL Network's Warren Sapp vehemently believes Freeney won't play. If he's active, he may be totally ineffective.

Colts coach Jim Caldwell was more guarded during his Monday afternoon interview about Dwight Freeney's (ankle) status for the Super Bowl.

"We’re preparing as if he’s not going to play, and if we get an opportunity to get him in there, we’ll do so," Caldwell said. Freeney appears to be a game-time decision, though we're tentatively betting he'll play. Still, he may be limited to obvious passing downs, with Raheem Brock starting.

I was just listening to Colin Cowherd and he had Mark Schlereth on. He was saying that if Freeney plays, the very first time he is in the Saints' linemand is going to cut him to test that ankle. Coupled with the above I think Freeney will pretty much be a non factor in this game. It sounds lke best case scenario is he is just in on passing downs, and even if he can do that he won't have his burst. Also a pretty good chance the first time he gets cut he is going to aggravate the issue.

Colts RE Dwight Freeney confirmed reports that he has a torn ligament in his right ankle.

Freeney will be held out of practice all week. Walking with a limp in flip-flops during Tuesday's Media Day, his ankle was "noticeable swollen." Freeney did say that the swelling is down from "the size of basketball" a week ago. The Colts are preparing as if their star pass rusher will not be available Sunday.
