They are going to need speed, and with the accent on pitching and defense, they figure to be involved in some tight games this year.
Ellsbury can make the difference by getting on base and quickly getting himself into scoring position-that could make the difference is some of these what figure to be close games this year.
I would trade Bucholz for a good player who can hit, but I say keep Jacoby unless the deal is just overwhelming.
ps I don't think Ellsbury has reached his potential yet and will get even better than he is during the next few seasons.
But he has a .350 OBP and gets caught about 15% of the time.

He may help a little but may cost the team as many runs defensively. Even so much so his manager is giving his starting gig to cameron.

Terry Francona told Jacoby Ellsbury that he will be moving to left field, according to Dan Roche of WBZ.

As expected, center field will be ceded to newly-acquired Mike Cameron. Ellsbury fared poorly in defensive metrics available to the public in 2009, numbers that don't agree with Boston's internal evaluations that had him as an average defender at worst.

I don't know, if you can get a VERY affordable Gonzalez for those two I do it and go after what seems a pretty affordable Holliday (at $16 mill).

I respect your opinion bur respectively disagree.
I think he is a budding star and I would keep him.
Since he has been told he is going to left field, it appears that they are going to keep him after all.
They have made enough changes already and imo ought to keep the rest of the core including Ellsbury.

I respect yours as well, but to keep a 28 year old poor mans Ichiro who doesnt walk, gets caught 15% of the time, does not walk and plays poor defense, to stop a deal to get a guy that hits .280 98 runs 35 HR 106 RBI .380 OBP in THE GRAND CANYON? For a team that right now may not have a legit 35 HR candidate? I am just saying they should think about it. I am sure there is a minor leaguer in the system that can bring speed to the team. With the corners there being Youk and Beltre, I would think about it.

          Sure think about it.
Treat it like pre Christmas or post Christmas shopping.
Wait until the price comes down a bit(usually around July when San Diego is hopelessly out of contention, the fans aren't coming out and they want to unload salaries).
ps I watch virtually very Sox game and would take exception to your term "poor defense."
He made some great and important catches and plays last year that other slower players wouldn't have reached.

What is more amazing is that they have the 3rd best record in baseball with Beckett and Ellsbury out most of the year, Dice-K and Buchholz hurt, Drew missing many games, Cameron out a ton and now Pedroia and Victor placed on the DL too. I've never seen so many BIG injuries hit one team before the All Star break, never.

DL before the break ... Beckett, Dice-K, Buchholz (might be), Ellsbury, Pedroia, V-Mart, Lowell, Cameron, Hermida. You would think they are 10-15 games out right now with that happening. It is truly amazing!!!!!!!

Absolutely UN-REAL! Now Varitek and Delcarmen go on the DL today. This is amazing. Kevin Cash is now our starting catcher?!?!
