true...in this instance...but, in theory, you could challenge a play hoping for a better result and end up with a worse result...

actually not true in this case. The ruling was that Fitz didn't maintain possession through the catch. It wasn't joint possession b/c they ruled Fitz didn't maintain possession. If the ball doesn't hit the ground (and in bounds of course) it can't be an incomplete pass. Since Fitz didn't catch it, it seems like it would have to be an interception.
