Financially speaking, Tiger Woods could walk away from golf right now and never look back. But it's his competitive drive and passion for the game that made him a millionaire many times over, so to think that anything -- even the havoc wreaked on his personal life in the last few weeks -- would push him away from the game is almost unfathomable.
Which is why the latest rumor from the British tabloid The Sun sounds so ridiculous: Tiger's wife, Elin, has given him an ultimatum in which he must decide between her or golf.
He told wife Elin he "will do anything" after being linked with a string of women. ... Elin has agreed to stay with the star for the sake of their two young children.
But she has given him the stark ultimatum: "It's golf... or me."
I don't want to be the guy who questions the Sun's journalistic integrity, but this was a throwaway in a story about Jamie Jungers' appearance on the Today Show. One would think that if this was a concrete story, it would be mentioned in the headline, no?.
Additionally, after the shocking quotes above are dropped, the Sun expounds on the ultimatum stating (via a "friend" of the family) that, "It will be a long time before he's traveling the globe playing golf unless Elin's by his side." And that seems to downplay the previous statement, because while Tiger might be forced to take his wife and kids on Tour, he's not being forced to decide between golf or marriage.
But maybe Elin is dropping that choice on Tiger and maybe he's even considering it. At this point it's all just conjecture, and in terms of Tiger news, nothing -- seriously, nothing -- can be considered completely irrefutable. Still, the notion of Woods quitting golf seems about as plausible as him entertaining a career in the adult film industry.
