    Gammons headed to MLB Network...

On Gammons, ESPN and the MLB Network By Tim Lemke on Dec. 9, 2009 into SportsBiz

When Peter Gammons announced that he'd be leaving ESPN to do some work for MLB Network, I thought of Harold Reynolds.

It wasn't just because Reynolds and Gammons were once colleagues on the Worldwide Leader. It was because of something he said repeatedly when asked about the difference between MLB Network and his former employer.

"You have time," he said, "to get a full thought out."

Reynolds never said it explicity, but the suggestion was that MLB Network was a far less annoying place to work as an analyst. ESPN, with its half-hour Baseball Tonight shows crammed in before games and in between other programs, didn't offer analysts the chance to really expound on anything for any length of time. The new all-baseball network, however, freed analysts to go in-depth without feeling like they had to wrap up a though before heading to commercial.

Watch "Baseball Tonight" sometime (if you can figure out when it's on) and then compare it to "Hot Stove" on MLB Network. It's like night and day in terms of pace.

Gammons, in comments to reporters at the Winter meetings in Indianapolis, said he was happy to go to an all-baseball network and hoped to get the chance to report more in-depth on players and their personalities.

“I think we've become jaundiced when it comes to the players,” Gammons said, according to BizofBaseball.com. “I love the players and look forward to covering that side of the game.”

With Gammons now gone, MLB Network truly has the lion's share of top talent when it comes to analysts. ESPN still has John Kruk, who is solid, as well as Eric Young and Fernando Vina. Buster Olney and Jayson Stark are also two of the best in the business. But MLB Network can boast of former players like Reynolds, Barry Larkin, Al Leiter, Joe Magrane, Mitch Williams and Dan Plesac, and has relationships with SI.com's Jon Heyman and Tom Verducci, Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal. Oh, and MLB Network has a guy by the name of Bob Costas.

It would seem that ESPN needs a renewed focus on its baseball coverage. To ignore this trend means risking a descent into irrelevance among fans.

I'm glad he's moving to the MLB network. they do a great job, and he will make them better. I never watch ESPN anymore, unless I'm watching a game. The NFL, MLB, and NBA networks do a better job than ESPN.

ESPN sucks!!!!! I think that they are more biased than MSNBC & Fox News. Their show PTI and Around the horn are the worst. During baseball season it was forget the other teams. Everyday it was Boston and the Yankees.

Jason Whitlock said that he was ran from ESPN because they had an agenda to dog Barry Bonds for steroids but when he mentioned Mark Maguire they wanted to be easy on him....

I agree ESPN sucks. ESPN will ram a story down our throats. Too many of their anchors like Stuart Scott are god awful. Scott is unwatchable. The most entertaining part of MNF is it's obvious Steve Young dislikes Scott.

I watch mostly because it's often the only sports network. During football season I mostly watch NFL Network. Same with baseball season. I'll watch MLB Network.

The MLB Network sucks. I swear I watched a SF game I had a few bucks on. Bases loaded bottom 9, up 1 run, and they took game the off, and I watched Harold Reynolds teach me the basics of sliding. Were they joking?

This was not a one time occorunce. They took more games off during the 9th inning than I can remember.

I am not a Jason Whitlock fan but he did say that ESPN has an agenda with certain players and I do believe that the personalities on ESPN are biased... If you watch PTI during baseball season all you are going to hear from Kornheiser is Redsox and Yankees.... They are not cutting edge they stick to the talking points like Fox News....

that would piss me off. I got the mlb package, so I really don't have a problem with coverage, but for some reason, I don't get every single game. As for the MLB Network, I don't watch any games on there, but just like their guys more than the guys on the ESPN. I actually feel that I learn stuff that helps me out with capping games. ESPN has turned into Gossip Girl. I can't watch it anymore, their experts, like Orestes Destrade have trouble completing sentences. He's the worst.

Were they broadcasting the game? I know they cut into many games during their nightly broadcast. I've always liked that. During a lull in action they might cut away from the game. They don't always go back to the game. If they don't they'll always give the update if something happens.

IMO MLB coverage far exceeds ESPN's.
