The WWE issued a statement regarding Albano's death on Wednesday, acknowledging his impact on the pro wrestling industry during his career.

"World Wrestling Entertainment was saddened to learn of the passing of one of the company's most popular and charismatic legends, 'Captain Lou Albano.' WWE extends its deepest condolences to the Albano family. "Captain Lou" was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1996. He performed for the WWE from 1983 to 1996. Albano began his storied career with Vincent J. McMahon in the 1960's as one half of "The Sicilians" tag team with his partner Tony Altimore. He will be greatly missed by the WWE and his fans."

Albano began his wrestling career in 1953 in Canada after attending the University of Tennessee, the WWE said in its press release.

After decades of success as a manager, Albano is widely credited with creating the first "Wrestlemania" in 1985.

The wrestler also earned fame by playing Cyndi Lauper's father in the popular video for "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."

Wrestlers Rescue founder Dawn Marie says Albano died Wednesday of natural causes. The organization helped raise funds for Albano's care after he was placed in hospice care.

An outsized personality, Albano had a taste for Hawaiian shirts and rubber bands hung from his cheek.

His sports career spanned nearly five decades.

Great line from his wikipedia biography

Albano's brother, Carl, taught health for 32 years at Ridgewood High School in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and was head of the Ridgewood High health department from 1974 until 2001.[18] Carl Albano's students have noted that he used his brother Lou as an example of the difference between crazy and unique.
