But, in my opinion, he IS overrated. That doesn't mean he's bad, he's a good player, but he really isn't as good as people make him out to be....."CFB YTD: 5-8-1 -16.2"

He's a shortstop. I think many overlook that. When compared to other Hall of Fame shortstops her ranks near the top in almost every category. There's probably only 2 HOF shortstops I'd take before Jeter. Honus Wagner and Ernie Banks.

He's a mediocre fielder.
He's a good hitter (average wise), but that is about all I'd take him for."CFB YTD: 5-8-1 -16.2"

Like I said, good hitter, no doubt about it. His offense is great. But to receive so much praise and adulation, you think he would be a great fielder too.
In my experience a lot of people take Jeter to be an excellent fielder, and that's a misconception. That's all I'm saying.
He is an OVERRATED fielder, and a HOF hitter.
That's my take..."CFB YTD: 5-8-1 -16.2"

When compared to HOF shortstops Jeter is 3rd in fielding% (3% behind Cal). Most say Ozzie Smith is the greatest fielding shortstop. Are you aware Jeter's fielding% is only 2 points behind Ozzie? 978 vs. 976. In no way shape or form does Jeter compare to Ozzie as a defensive SS. Only pointing out Jeter is better than he's given credit.
As a player Ozzie BA is 55 points behind Jeter 317 vs 262. HRs 223 vs. 28. OB% 387 vs. 337. Slugging% 459 vs. 328.
Statistically, if anyone is overrated as a fielder it's Ozzie. Ozzie was glorified because he made some amazing plays that we've seen dozens of times. He was more smooth in the field. Doing his backflips didn't hurt the attention he received.
Based on the above Jeter is head and shoulders above Ozzie as a complete shortstop.

Ozzie is an overrated fielder as well. Going by statistics. I'm not arguing that point. Jeter is overrated in the fielding department.
In 2001, 02 and 03 Jeter was statistically THE WORST FIELDING SS in the AL consecutively. He ranked dead last in Range and Zone. Great fielders don't rank dead last for their position, sure they have bad years, but they don't rank dead last, and they don't do it three seasons in a row.
He's improved a lot since then. And that's great, but he is still not a good fielder, and like I said, he is mediocre at best.
A lot of people (in my experience) talk about how great he is, with his backhanded stabs, and "jump throws" and his voluntary face plants. And to me, it's a lot like what people say about Ozzie. Does it look good and "smooth? Yeah, it does. But when you look at hard statistics. He's a sub-par SS defensively. Not to mention he's not even the best SS on his OWN TEAM!"CFB YTD: 5-8-1 -16.2"

I agree! He was terrible. I also agree he's greatly improved. But look at the last 6 years. He's finished in top-10 5 years. Not great but again better than he's portrayed. IMO he's perceived as a mediocre fielder because of his early years.

I'm not suggesting Jeter is a great fielder. When compared to other HOF shortstops he's one of the best. Look at the stats of the HOF shortstops. Then tell my why they're in the hall? Then compare Jeter and tell me he's not a HOFer. Throughout history there's dozens of better fielding shortstops that aren't in the hall.

I'm a Red Sox fan and i love Jeter for his game and his class on and off the field. He may not be the greatest fielder ever at short but the guy is absolutely clutch. I will never forget two plays with Jeter and they are both while playing defense. One was flying into the stands at 3rd base vs Boston in the playoffs a few years back. He was bloody and caught the ball. The other was in Oakland (I think) years ago when he caught the cutoff in front of home plate and flipped it backwards to get the guy out at the plate. Great, great, player imo.

Diving into the stands.........
Takes three full steps, dives into stands, voluntarily
Oakland flip......
Didn't have to touch it, even if he did Posada was the star on that play. (unbelievable catch and tag!!) Giambi not sliding makes me laugh every time I see it.
Two plays that fuel Jeter's misconception as a great fielder, IMo....."CFB YTD: 5-8-1 -16.2"
