  • 2 TITLE FIGHTS SCRATCHED at STRIKEFORCE

A card once newsworthy because of its sheer volume of title fights has now seen that number of championship bouts cut in half.

A week after the organization announced that Alistair Overeem's (29-11) injured hand forced him out of a title defense with challenger Fabricio Werdum (11-4-1), Strikeforce executive Mike Afromowitz today confirmed with MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps | MMAjunkie.com) a fight between Nick Diaz (20-7) and Joe Riggs (30-10) has also been dropped from the Aug. 15 card.

Diaz and Riggs, whose first epic meeting took place under the UFC umbrella three years ago, were slated to fight for Strikeforce's first-ever welterweight title.

The Aug. 15 show takes place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., and airs on Showtime.

The loss of the Diaz vs. Riggs II fight (Riggs won the first meeting via decision) was first reported by GracieFighter.com, the official site of Cesar Gracie's school, which is home to Diaz. The report stated that Riggs could have an extended hospital stay because of "a bad reaction to an as of yet undisclosed drug."

"I heard something like, but we're still looking into it," Afromowitz said.

Afromowitz confirmed that the organization is searching for a replacement to fight Diaz, but he couldn't say whether or not the fight would still have title implications.

"It's still all speculation right now," Afromowitz said. "We just don't know yet."

The Aug. 15 Strikeforce event is headlined by a fight between Gina Carano (7-0) and Cris "Cyborg" Santos (7-1) for Strikeforce's first-ever 145-pound women's title. The Strikeforce lightweight title is also up for grabs when current champ Josh Thomson (16-2) meets interim title-holder Gilbert Melendez (15-2) on the card.

As for Werdum, Afromowitz said the organization hopes to also find a replacement for him. Sources have suggested that the former UFC fighter could get a crack at an interim heavyweight title (Overeem hasn't defended his belt since winning it in November 2007) if a high-caliber replacement is found, but Afromowitz declined to comment on the possibility.

At ufc 57 when riggs beat diaz via UD they both went to the same hospital and that wasn't a good idea as they kept going after each other in the hospital. I honestly thought this and the melendez/thomson fight were going to be the 2 best.

and i am sick of overeem ever since he cracked his hand it IS NOT healing because he is on juice, i don't care what anyone else says the dude fights in japan no problem, but everytime it's time to take a drug test or defend a belt he somehow pulls out. He won the belt in november 2007 and hasn't defended it yet, but has had other fights in japan, and won all 3 i believe. I like overeem and i want to see him, i don't know why he does this B.S

ANOTHER UPDATE TO THE CARD GUYS !!!!!

        Hieron-Diaz for Strikeforce title

By Ken Pishna/MMAWeekly.com 7 hours, 45 minutes ago

MMAWeekly.com sources on Wednesday confirmed that Jay Hieron has signed a new multi-fight contract with Strikeforce that will put him on the promotion’s Aug. 15 event “Carano vs. Cyborg.” He will face Nick Diaz for the first ever Strikeforce welterweight championship.

Sources indicated that Hieron was in talks with both Strikeforce and the Ultimate Fighting Championship that came down to the wire. One of the deciding factors between the two promotions appears to be Hieron having already committed to appearing in the upcoming MMA video game from EA Sports, a challenger to the UFC branded THQ video game “UFC 2009 Undisputed.”

It was announced on Wednesday that Fedor Emelianenko – still in talks with the UFC – will don the cover of the EA Sports game.

Hieron (17-4) was on the front lines for the collapse of the IFL in summer 2008 and had fielded offers from the UFC and Strikeforce before accepting an offer with Affliction. In January, he fought Jason High in the swing bout for Affliction’s second event, “Day of Reckoning,” earning a brutal knockout in 64 seconds. A native of Long Island, N.Y. He is a mainstay of Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas.

Strikeforce started the “Carano vs. Cyborg” event with four title bouts scheduled, which it saw dwindle to two due to varying circumstances. The signing of Hieron vs. Diaz for the welterweight belt, and the previously announced signing of a bout with Renato “Babalu” Sobral defending his Strikeforce light heavyweight title from Gegard Mousasi, Strikeforce is back to four title bouts on Aug. 15.

The Babalu vs. Mousasi bout had originally been slated to appear on the recently cancelled Affliction “Trilogy” event.
