Some of these guy's I can understand, but some of these guys should be ashamed of themselfs. As the article points out, some of these guy's are broadcasters, and T.V analyst. Steve largent is a freaking congressman for crying out loud!
To the extent that the NFLPA settled the class action involing 2,056 former players in order to curry favor with men who might now help the union fend off the league’s intention to make major gains in the next Collective Bargaining Agreement, it makes sense to know some of the higher-profile class members who might suddenly decide to start chiming in on the CBA discussions.
We’ve obtained a full list of the class of retired players who’ll each receive roughly $10,000 each as part of the $26 million setlement, and here are some of the guys with sufficient name recognition (and/or jobs in broadcasting) to make them potential candidates to carry the union’s water:
Trev Alberts, Ken Anderson, Ottis Anderson, Doug Atkins, Bob Avellini, Brian Baldinger, Carl Banks, Lem Barney, Steve Bartkowski, Bill Bates, Chuck Bednarik, Bobby Bell, Cornelius Bennett, Elvin Bethea, Todd Blackledge, Bucky Brooks, Chad Brown, Ross Browner, Harry Carson, Maurice Carthon, Todd Christensen, Dwight Clark, Ben Coates, Roger Craig, Randall Cunningham, Gary Danielson, Dermontti Dawson, Len Dawson, Fred Dean, Joe DeLamielleure, Conrad Dobler, Dave Duerson, Carl Eller, Chuck Foreman, Frank Gifford, Randy Gradishar, L.C. Greenwood, Jack Ham, Dan Hampton, Thomas Henderson, Merril Hoge, Paul Hornung, Sam Huff, Claude Humphrey, Charlie Joiner, Deacon Jones, Bob Kuechenberg, Jeff Lageman, Bruce Laird, Steve Largent, Floyd Little, Larry Little, James Lofton, Marty Lyons, Dexter Manley, Archie Manning, Clay Matthews, Jim McMahon, Karl Mecklenburg, Mark Moseley, Anthony Munoz, Alan Page, Vince Papale, Drew Pearson, William Perry, John Randle, Mark Rypien, Gale Sayers, Art Shell, Donnie Shell, Heath Shuler, Vai Sikahema, Phil Simms, Brian Sipe, Tony Siragusa, Jan Stenerud, Darryl Talley, Steve Tasker, Tom Waddle, Herschel Walker, and Doug Williams.
(Other members of the class likely won’t be taking up for the union, given their current employment by NFL teams in non-playing roles: Chuck Cecil, Jack Del Rio, Leslie Frazier, Joe Greene, Kevin Greene, Martin Mayhew, and Ron Rivera.)
So keep your eyes and ears open. We firmly believe that the NFLPA caved on this action in order to suck up to the players, and we’ll be watching to see if any of the guys who each got $10,000 for nothing will be suddenly motivated to help the players in their battle against the league.
