    Saints release veteran DT Thomas
The New Orleans Saints have released veteran defensive tackle Hollis Thomas. The 35-year-old Thomas missed the first half of the 2008 season after hurting his triceps in training camp. He made 10 tackles in the Saints' final eight games. Thomas came to the Saints in a draft-day trade from Philadelphia in 2006 and has made 117 tackles with 6 1/2 sacks and a fumble recovery in his three seasons in New Orleans.

Broncos release running back Selvin Young
The Denver Broncos' crowded backfield has become a bit clearer with the release of third-year tailback Selvin Young. The Broncos released Young on Thursday. They used the 12th overall pick in last weekend's draft to take Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno, and will have a half-dozen tailbacks competing for playing time. The Broncos also have holdovers Peyton Hillis and Ryan Torian and free agents J.J. Arrington, Correll Buckhalter and LaMont Jordan.

Steelers cut LB Foote, five-year starter
The Pittsburgh Steelers released starting inside linebacker Larry Foote on Monday, a move expected since Foote asked to be traded or cut. Foote has started every Steelers game for five seasons, including their Super Bowl victories last season and after the 2005 season. But he was unhappy with coming off the field on passing downs for Lawrence Timmons, a 2007 first-round draft pick. With Timmons ready to start, Foote told the Steelers last week he wanted to be traded or released.

Rams cut LB Tinoisamoa, team's leading tackler
The St. Louis Rams have released veteran linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa, the team's leading tackler last season. Coach Steve Spagnuolo made the surprise announcement in a statement released on Friday, calling it a "difficult decision based on a lot of factors." He did not elaborate and the Rams did not return messages seeking comment. Tinoisamoa is a six-year veteran who led the team with 135 tackles in 2008. He was a second-round draft choice, the 43rd overall selection in the 2002 draft.

Redskins cut ties with longtime RT Jansen
The Washington Redskins have released veteran right tackle Jon Jansen, a fixture on the team's offensive line for much of the last decade. Jansen was cut Friday after a meeting with owner Dan Snyder, front office chief Vinny Cerrato and coach Jim Zorn. The 33-year-old lineman started 122 games for the Redskins, but age and injuries were starting to take their toll, and he was expected to be an expensive backup this year. Jansen was a second-round draft pick from Michigan in 1999.
