  • Matt Cassel Traded to the Chiefs

No shocker there with Pioli. He will join Vrabel.

Cassel sent to ChiefsComment Email Print Share ESPN.com news services

Matt Cassel, whom the New England Patriots named as their franchise player in early February, has been traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cassel has been informed he is being traded to the Chiefs, ESPN.com's John Clayton and ESPN's Michael Smith have confirmed.

The Boston Globe reported on its Web site that official paperwork had been filed with the NFL. The story was first reported by NFL.com.

Cassel had accepted the Patriots' non-exclusive franchise tender, guaranteeing the quarterback at least $14.65 million next season. Cassel faxed his acceptance to the Patriots, the NFL and the NFLPA, but the Patriots also needed to offer him the one-year contract.

The franchise tag's value is the average of the top five salaries for NFL players at a particular position.

Cassel finished 327 of 516 for 3,693 yards, with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

It would be the Chiefs' second acquisition of a major member of the Patriots' organization in as many days; the Chiefs traded for linebacker Mike Vrabel on Friday. It also was orchestrated by one as well -- Scott Pioli, the former Patriots vice president of player personnel who this year was hired as the Chiefs' general manager.

Nice call, Wayne. Surprised it happened this early. Pats must have seen something the way Brady alked down the aisle during his wedding the other day to convince them he is ready!

Pioli and Belichek probably had this all worked out before he left his office in New England. This was really the biggest no brainer ever once you heard how well Bill and Scott worked together. When i saw Vrabel go to KC yesterday for basically peanuts, i knew something was up. I just hope they got something good in return.

I see a good little rivalry getting a little more fuel now with KC and Denver. Cassel and Mcdaniels will now face off. Pioli and Vrabel are also in KC and the Pats 3rd WR (Gaffney) is now in Denver i think. The AFC West could be a little more interesting.

Some sites are now reporting that it was a multi player trade and that Vrabel & Cassel are in the same trade together to KC and compensation is still not known yet.

I have also heard rumors of N.E. packaging draft picks and sending them to Carolina for Julius Peppers.

The Chiefs sent their second-round pick, No. 34 overall, to the Patriots to acquire their desperately needed quarterback.

That is a STEAL for KC imo. For New England, it opens up 17 million in cap space and gives them a nice pick. I think they have other things up their sleeve now with the draft picks or the money.

I think it was a good move for both teams. Chiefs desperately needed a QB, and now they can focus on getting Curry with their first overall pick because they no longer need a QB.

KC could sure use a Crabtree type receiver too. Put him on the other side of Bowe and give Cassel some weapons.
