2 Units on Philadelphia Phillies -1½ +165 (Moyer - L, Millwood - R)
With their All-Star designated hitter relegated to pinch-hitting duties, the Mariners go for their 11th straight road win when they take on the Philadelphia Phillies in the opener of a three-game set. Seattle has won 10 in a row away from home, equaling the team mark set last season. The Mariners have not lost a road game since May 14 at Cleveland, and that's their only loss in their last 15 on the road. The Mariners have won a season-high six in a row to open a 12-game road trip, with the next six games being in NL parks. Martinez is not expected to appear on defense in this series or in this weekend's three-game set against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium. He has appeared in the field in just three games over the last three-plus seasons -- none since June 12, 2001 at Colorado. That leaves a big hole in Seattle's offense, considering Martinez is third in the AL with 47 RBIs, sixth with a .328 batting average and tied for sixth with 14 home runs. During the 10-game road winning streak, Martinez has batted .381 (16-for-42) with six homers and 17 RBIs while scoring 10 runs. Taking his place in the order will be another 40-year-old, but left-hander Jamie Moyer has only three hits in 23 at-bats over the last 15 years.
5 Units on New York Mets -107 (Kinney - R, Bacsik - L)
Despite a flood of injuries over the past few weeks, the Mets are playing as well as they have all season and hope to continue that momentum in the opener of a three-game set with the Milwaukee Brewers. New York reached double digits in runs for the first time since September in defeating the Atlanta Braves 10-4 on Sunday without Mike Piazza, Mo Vaughn and Roberto Alomar. A few hours after Pedro Astacio became the eighth New York player on the disabled list, Jeromy Burnitz capped an eight-run sixth inning with a three-run homer. Burnitz, on the disabled list from April 23 to May 23 because of a fractured left hand, also doubled to start the big sixth inning. New York has gone 7-5 the last two weeks against division rivals Atlanta and Philadelphia but still trailing NL East-leading Atlanta by 11 games. Milwaukee has also come around of late, winning three of four. Richie Sexson hit a tiebreaking homer and Mike DeJean pitched a hitless ninth for his second save of the weekend as the Brewers beat the Dodgers 4-3 on Sunday to win consecutive road series. Sexson hit his second tiebreaking homer in three days to help Milwaukee take two of three from Los Angeles, a week after the Dodgers swept the Brewers in a three-game set at Miller Park.
4 Units on Anaheim Angels +108 (Ortiz - R, Ohka - R)
The Expos, who are on the third stop of a six-city, 22-game trip away from Montreal, begin their second stint in San Juan this season. Montreal went 6-4 during a 10-game San Juan homestand in April. The Expos have struggled so far on their road odyssey, with losses in six of the first seven games away from home. Montreal has felt the absence of All-Star Vladimir Guerrero, who returns Tuesday after missing six games with a muscle strain in his lower back. While the Expos could have used Guerrero's bat during the slump, manager Frank Robinson thinks the defense has been the cause of his team's struggles. ``It's surely hurting us,'' Robinson said. ``I'm not talking about tough plays either. We're just not making the plays. I have no quarrels with the pitching, they're doing a good job for us.'' Anaheim comes into the series with some momentum, after taking three of four from Tampa Bay over the weekend. The defending champs are excited for their chance to play in front of a new fan base.
