    CHAMPS SPORTS BOWL - Tuesday Dec 27, 2005 - 5:00 PM ET

    Opinion Selection (1% of Bankroll)

    Colorado +10 over Clemson

The Buffaloes hope to stampede the Cavaliers in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando on Tuesday. This is Colorado’s 3rd Bowl game in 4 years but has had to recently endure serious issues on and off the field. Coach Gary Barnett was let go after the big loss to Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game, so defensive coordinator Mike Hankwitz will coach the team. The Buffs started the year 7-2, stumbled badly down the stretch, losing three straight contests, while being outscored a whopping 120-22 in the games. Colorado was able to capture the Big 12 North Division, but the team suffered an embarrassing 70-3 setback to Texas in the Big 12 title game.

Clemson has been up and down and back up during the season. They opened with two victories before falling in their next three contests, which included a heartbreaking 36-30 loss to Miami in triple overtime. Clemson was able to break out of the slump and went on to collect victories in five of its final
six games, including its last 3.

Offensively on the season the Tigers put forth a solid effort, averaging 27 ppg behind 386 ypg. They were impressive on the ground as well as through the air, chalking up 152 ypg rushing, while throwing for a solid 234 ypg. The Tigers found success on the ground thanks to the running back tandem of James Davis and Reggie Merriweather. While the ground game was solid throughout most of the season, the Tigers' passing attack was paced by the arm of Charlie Whitehurst, who completed an impressive 67% of his passes for over 2,200 yards; however the he closed out the regular season with just 11 touchdowns against nine interceptions.

The Clemson defensive unit was very tough, allowing a meager 18 ppg behind 334 ypg. The unit had some trouble with the pass, allowing 201 ypg through the air, but played much better against the run, as the Tigers held the opposition to 130 ypg on 3.6 ypc.

Colorado had some impressive moments at the offensive end this season, ultimately averaging 25 ppg behind 351 ypg. Colorado's offensive philosophy throughout the season was "pass first, run second", which would explain why they finished the year averaging just 118 ypg on the ground, while throwing for 232 ypg. Unfortunately, starting quarterback Joel Klatt received a concussion in the loss to Texas and is currently suffering from some lingering effects. Klatt is not completely scratched from the game, but James Cox will be under center to start the contest. Klatt's leadership will be missed on the field, but Cox has several years of experience in the system and should be able to produce a solid performance. Cox will need help from his entire supporting cast, including the rushing attack, which is the plan. On the season, the Buffs' ground game was led by Charles Hugh, who racked up 842 rushing yards to go
    with six touchdowns.

The Buffs opened the season with solid play on the defensive side, however as the season progressed Colorado slowly started to show signs of weakness. Overall on the year, the team only allowed 24 ppg, while permitting 348 ypg. The Buffs were sensational against the run, holding the opposition to just 95 ypg on the ground. The unit did not enjoy the same success against the pass, as the team surrendered
    252 ypg through the air.

Interim coach Hankwitz said he has noticed a change in his players' attitude since arriving in Orlando early last week. "There aren't as many questions (about the coaching situation). Everything has cleared," he said. "The focus has moved toward the game, so I sense a difference." The Buffs practiced in full pads last Friday for the first time there, and Hankwitz called the work "outstanding. The intensity and competition were excellent. We are building up for the game and getting excited about playing."

Clemson comes into this game with some questions as well. How excited the Tigers will be to face Colorado will be a major issue. Coach Tommy Bowden also knows that Colorado should not be overlooked. "We will face a team that is rejuvenated, wanting to impress their new coach. That happens quite a bit when a new coach is hired for a bowl game." Indeed, twice when Clemson has changed coaches prior to a bowl (1978 and 1993), the Tigers won the bowl game. The one time the opposition changes coaches (1985 Minnesota for the Independence Bowl) for a bowl game against Clemson, the opposition won.

The Tigers might also suffer from a case of “what might have been.” Three weeks after pounding Florida State in a 21-point win, Clemson watched the Seminoles celebrate an ACC championship and gain entrance to a BCS bowl. If the Tigers had not lost in overtime to Miami or Boston College, not lost at Wake Forest — won any of those games — they could have been in the Seminoles' place. "It was kind of frustrating," said senior cornerback Tye Hill. "If it wasn't for a few points here or there, it might have been us." The Tigers realized how close they were to a breakthrough season, a chance at the championship, a possible trip to the Orange Bowl. "Any of those games," said center Dustin Fry, speaking to reporters who cover the Tigers. "If we score one more touchdown, basically, we're playing Virginia Tech Saturday night and maybe celebrating today. It kind of makes you sick."

Two Clemson football players were suspended for academic reasons and will miss the Champ Sports Bowl, and a third was kicked off the team by coach Tommy Bowden. Clemson tight end Bobby Williamson and defensive end Kwam Williams will miss the game after being suspended for academic reasons. Receiver Kelvin Grant was dismissed for violating team rules. Grant sustained a knee injury in October and would not have been able to play in the bowl game. He had 45 receptions for 437 yards in 26 games with Clemson. Williamson started nine of 11 regular-season games and caught nine passes for 100 yards. Williams played in nine games.

The Tigers may also lose a few points in the kicking game. Senior Stephen Furr will handle kickoffs for Clemson with excellent kicker Jad Dean still handling field goals and extra points. Dean has been limited in practice by tendinitis in his left leg, making it more difficult to plant, but he said he would kick field goals and extra points in the game with the University of Colorado. Meanwhile, the Buffaloes have the best kicker and some of the best special team units in the country…

…It’s also a good idea to usually play AGAINST streaks in Bowl games. A classic trap gamblers fall into is finding teams that ended the regular season with winning or losing streaks and betting those streaks to continue. Nothing can break a team’s momentum more easily than several weeks off. Some high-powered offenses require precise timing that can be thrown off with a long break. Conversely, nothing is more valuable to a struggling team than to have an extended time to regroup. In this case, the Tigers could easily come in over-confident and out of sync, while Colorado will be hungry to get a very bad taste out of their mouths.

Plenty of technical numbers back up a play on the big underdogs here, as Clemson is 0-6 ATS as a favorite of 3+ SU wins since 2000 and an ugly 1-14-1 ATS as a road/neutral site favorite of more than 4 points vs. opponents off a SU loss of 4+ points. Several PRO INFO SPORTS College Bowl POWER SYSTEMS are active for this game, all of which point to the Buffaloes at least covering the large spread…We don’t eagerly back a team with a coaching change and starting a backup quarterback; however, those factors have been over-compensated for with the pointspread, so the line value actually is with the Buffaloes, not Clemson. The Tigers are certainly aware of these factors and are likely to play down to the level of their opponent here, allowing the Buffs to at least cover the number.

PROJECTED FINAL SCORE: CLEMSON 24 COLORADO 23

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: CLEMSON 19 COLORADO 10

    INSIGHT BOWL - Tuesday Dec 27, 2005 - 8:30 PM ET

2 STAR SELECTION (2.5% of Bankroll)

    Rutgers +10 over Arizona State

The Scarlet Knights take aim at their first-ever Bowl win on Tuesday, when they tangle with the Sun Devils at the Insight Bowl in Phoenix. Rutgers has enjoyed a near storybook season that includes their first winning campaign since 1992. They have made just one previous bowl appearance in school history and ironically it came against Arizona State. The Sun Devils and Knights met in the 1978 Garden State Bowl, with Arizona State claiming a 34-18 victory. As for those Sun Devils, they squeaked into the postseason by virtue of a 23-20 victory over Arizona in their season finale, giving the team the six wins required to become bowl eligible.

Arizona State enters the game as one of the top offensive units in the nation, averaging a healthy 36 ppg off an impressive 500+ total ypg. The team has had most of its success through the air, while also rushing for a decent 140 ypg. Despite a change in quarterbacks from Sam Keller to freshman Rudy Carpenter, the offense has remained potent. Carpenter has completed an impressive 69% of his throws for over 1,800 yards with 13 touchdowns against only two interceptions. In the backfield, another freshman in Keegan Herring leads the way. Herring has already set an Arizona State freshman record with 791 rushing yards and has also scored six times.

What has kept Arizona State from being an elite team is its defense, which is currently allowing 29 ppg and 463 total ypg. The unit has had all sorts of problems stopping the run and has had the same amount of trouble with the pass.

Rutgers has been nothing short of solid on the offensive side of the ball this season, as it is churning out nearly 28 ppg and 385 total ypg. The unit has had success on the ground and through the air with QB Ryan Hart seeing a majority of the snaps. He has completed 60% of his pass attempts for 1,761 yards with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Many of his passes have found there way into the hands of Brian Leonard, who has pulled in a team-best 49 receptions for 470 yards and five scores. The versatile FB has also rushed for 694 yards and a team-high 10 touchdowns. Freshman Ray Rice really came over the last several weeks of the season and cracked the 1,000-yard plateau.

Defensively, Rutgers has done a decent job this year, as it is allowing 24 ppg and 345 total ypg. The unit has thrived against the run, limiting its foes to just 126 ypg on the ground and 14 touchdowns. Although the Knights have posted an impressive 46 sacks this season, they have been vulnerable to the pass, yielding 217 ypg and 16 touchdowns against just six interceptions.

Both teams would appear to have the ability to exploit the opponent’s weakness with its strength; however, we give the edge to the underdog Knights for a couple of reasons. First of all, rushing projections are particularly important, as the team that runs for more yardage covers 75+% of the time. That would certainly favor Rutgers, as they should have success against the horrid Arizona State defense. That ability should somewhat protect their defense by keeping the Sun Devils offense off the field. Meanwhile, Arizona State’s strength is their talented receiving crew; however, on a team hit the flu over the past few days, wide receivers have been hardest hit. Derek Hagan and Nate Kimbrough returned to practice after missing some time, but Terry Richardson and Moey Mutz missed even more time, while TB Herring missed several days of practice as well. "It's a long list," Coach Koetter said. "There are a lot of guys not feeling 100 percent. The show goes on, but it's difficult when you don't have everybody here. For the most part, Koetter has given a lukewarm evaluation of his team’s bowl workouts. That's a big concern for the coach given the enthusiasm expected from a Rutgers team making its first bowl appearance in 27 years.

On the other side, Greg Schiano has been very pleased with his team’s focus during practices and he brings in a healthy team, including QB Hart. That’s something Rutgers was without much of the regular season. Hart holds almost every Rutgers career and single-season passing record and should go out with a big game, along with playing the part of a mature senior leader. Practicing well with healthy players has given Schiano a chance to work in a few new wrinkles that will give his team another competitive edge.

The Sun Devils won't have to pack their bags for a long distance bowl trip, not with an Insight Bowl berth literally just down the street from their campus; however, such a situation usually gives a heavily favored “home” team a false sense of security. Arizona State has played several Bowl games close to home, but they are 0-4 ATS in Bowl games since 1986 when not getting 7+ points.

A couple of PRO INFO SPORTS College Bowl POWER SYSTEMS are also active for this game, indicating a play against the Sun Devils…This should be an exciting game with plenty of offensive fireworks. Rutgers, being the more motivated and healthy team should give Arizona State all they can handle, as we look the victor to be in doubt until the end and providing the Scarlet Knights with at least a spread win.

PROJECTED FINAL SCORE: ARIZONA STATE 31 RUTGERS 28

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: ARIZONA STATE 45 RUTGERS 40
