UCLA BRUINS (7-1) @ MICHIGAN WOLVERINES (7-0)
SAT 12/17/05 12 HIGH NOON ON ESPN
Ladies and gents this should be a good one to watch. What could be
better than grabbing RED ZONE SPORTS free college basketball newsletter
selection, and watching it win on ESPN. Bruins are a healthy 7-1, but that
is deceiving, since they haven't left the friendly confines of Pauley
Pavilion except to play a game in Madison Square Garden, which they lost,
and a single away game at Drexel, that they should have lost. Drexel blew
it down the stretch by missing three consecutive one and ones, to lose in
overtime by one. Michigan on the other hand has a quality win at Notre
Dame, and a recent rout of South Florida and a victory over Butler.
Ben Howland has revived Bruin basketball, by getting to the "Big Dance"
in only his second year. For the UCLA faithful, getting there is hardly
enough. John Wooden spoiled them in an era where there was no scholarship
restrictions, and you could redshirt almost as many as the football team
did. The Bruins are coming off a big win over a quality Nevada club, but as
mentioned earlier, that was at home. UCLA has excellent guard depth, and
have a candidate for the best sophomore in the nation in point guard Jordan
Farmer. What they truly lack is a physical presence in the post, and those
that are going to try to do this by committee are not physical in any
manner. Bruins have two seven footers, that are soft as warm butter.
Howland hasn't got that mega recruit yet that you can go to at the end of
the game, and can carry you in those tough road encounters.
Much maligned Michigan coach Tommy Amaker had a season last year that
should only come once in a coaches lifetime. After winning 23 the year
before, he appeared ready to make a deep run into the tourney in 2005. Then
they had a rash of injuries, and suspensions, that left them playing a
complete group of newcomers. It was so bad, that their best player Lester
Abrams played a total of 86 minutes all season. What followed was a 12-3
beginning to a 1-13 collapse and last place in the Big Ten. The Wolverines
have sweet 16 type of talent, and the big factor as we see it will be the
chemistry, as those injured, are coming back to displace the younger players
who started last season. So far Amaker has the chemistry well in hand, and
everything is hunky-dorey, but it always is when you win. RED ZONE SPORTS
says take Michigan, who problably will be a small dog to the #14th ranked
Bruins by game time and win outright.
