Game: Wake Forest vs. Georgia Tech 1:30 p.m. ET
Sport: NCAA - National Collegiate Athletic Association
Line: Wake Forest +8-110
Prediction: Wake Forest +8-110
Explanation: 2 Units
The Yellow Jackets offense is a mediocre unit at best, not the type of offense that is likely to score points in bunches making for an easy pointspread cover. QB Reggie Ball has thrown for more than 175 yards only twice in seven games, despite the presence of Calvin Johnson at wideout. This offense hasn’t been in sync all season, and their schedule has not helped matters – this team has played only three games since September 24th, thanks to a couple of bye weeks sandwiched around an unexpected bye when their game against Miami was postponed due to Hurricane Wilma. We’re talking about a team that has scored 14 points or less in every game except the Duke contest since beating UConn back on September 17th. This is not a team in a positive rhythm. It’s surely worth noting that Georgia Tech hasn’t enjoyed a single season with a winning ATS record as a favorite during Gailey’s tenure. And it’s surely worth noting that with Virginia, Miami and Georgia still remaining on their slate, coming off a huge homecoming win over Clemson, this is an obvious flat spot on the schedule for the Yellow Jackets.
Jim Grobe arrived in Winston-Salem at the start of the 2001 season. Since that time, Wake has had a very definitive and noticeable ATS personality. The Demon Deacons make horrible favorites, but excellent underdogs. The underdog in Wake Forest games during the Grobe era in his first four years at the helm went 31-13 ATS. This year, the underdog in Wake Forest games has gone 7-2 ATS. 38-15 over a five year span is worth paying attention to! Wake has covered the spread in each of their last five games, seriously undervalued by the linesmakers. RB Chris Barcley just set the all time Demon Deacon record for yardage last week, making things easy for Ben Mauk or Cory Randolph, who have split time at quarterback. Their run defense has been outstanding, holding their last three foes (BC, NC St and Duke) well under 100 yards apiece. And Wake has been winning the turnover battle on a weekly basis – this offense hangs on to the football, while the defense is doing an excellent job forcing mistakes from their opponents. Put it all together and Wake plus more than a touchdown is a bet worth making against almost any foe, including this mediocre Georgia Tech squad.
