It’s another mid-week WAC-MAC battle in college football on Tuesday, as Toledo plays at Fresno State. Boise State thumped Bowling Green in last week's battle of MAC vs. WAC superpowers. PRO INFO SPORTS had a winning 3½ STAR SELECTION on the Broncos in that game, and we expect to see the home team “WAC” the visitor here again.
The Rockets have steamrolled through their first three games, but they haven't played anyone with a pulse beating Western Illinois, Western Michigan and Temple by a combined score of 160 to 54. The Bulldogs blew out Weber State 55-17 before losing to Oregon 37-34 in a battle.
With veteran QB Bruce Gradkowski at the helm, Toledo's offense has been brutally efficient; however, Gradkowski is questionable for this game with an undisclosed injury. According to Toledo, his participation will be a gametime decision. Even if he does play, and we’ll be surprised if he doesn’t at least start, the Rockets are a fish out of water here and will likely suffer a similar fate as Bowling Green did on Boise’s blue turf last week. The difference here is that that the grass is green and it’s real; however, that doesn’t benefit Toledo. While their quick passing attack is deadly on Astroturf, they are just 1-5-1 ATS when playing on natural grass over the past several seasons.
While Toledo has put up gaudy numbers, they haven’t played a team like Fresno State. The Rockets pass defense was horrific last year, and it has been average at best over the first three games this season. Fresno State should get a big shot in the arm when heart-and-soul defensive lineman Garrett McIntyre returns from an ankle sprain that kept him out of the Oregon game. He's probable for the Tuesday night battle, and he has to get consistent pressure in the backfield and force the Rocket throwers to rush.
The Bulldogs are a brutally physical team, especially at home. They should be able to establish a ground game with their stellar stable of backs, and then have QB Paul Pinegar hit some big plays in the passing game. Playing at Fresno is no treat even for opponents used to the extremely intimidating atmosphere. For a team like Toledo, they are in for a rude welcome and awakening. As it is, the Rockets have completely fizzled away from the comforts of home. Since 1996, they are 0-10 SU & ATS as a non-conference dog of less than 18 points or favorite of less than 4 in road/neutral site games. Toledo has failed to cover the spread in those 10 games by a jaw-dropping 26.9 points a game! Meanwhile, Fresno State is 6-0 SU & ATS at home vs. non-conference foes when playing on 5+ days rest. The Bulldogs hare have beat the spread by 19 points a game, creating a very strong non-conference dichotomy between Toledo and Fresno.
As those numbers suggest, when Toledo loses, they are usually blown out and fall far short of covering the spread. In fact, the Rockets have crashed to an 0-20 ATS mark in their last 20 SU losses. Once this game gets out of hand, they will probably save their best effort for conference play, which will begin next week. Their first MAC contest will be against Eastern Michigan. Not only is Toledo 0-5 ATS before playing EMU when not favored by more than 3 TDs, most teams don’t do well before playing the MAC cupcakes.
