Game: Season Total: Dolphins UNDER 6 Wins

Sport: NFL - National Football League

    Line: season total 6

    Prediction: Under 6 Wins

Explanation: 10 UNITS The Money Pick

Season Total: Dolphins UNDER 6 Wins

We have nothing positive to say about Miami, except that we have a good number to bet them Under their season win total. The Dolphins enter the season with expectations every bit as low as the 49ers and Browns, two teams lined at 4.5 wins. But their schedule is much, much tougher than those two teams. Here’s how Miami starts their season: Broncos, @ Jets, Panthers, @ Bills, @ Bucs, Chiefs, @ Saints, Falcons, Patriots. A 2-7 start might be the best they could hope for; 1-8 or 0-9 is equally realistic. It doesn’t get that much easier down the stretch either – the Dolphins close out the season with trips to Cleveland, Oakland, San Diego and New England, while facing the Bills, Jets and Titans at home. It’s quite possible that Miami will be underdogs in 15 of their 16 games this season!

So the linesmakers are asking the Dolphins to win as many as six games in straight up fashion as an underdog. All three of their divisional opponents are lined at 8 wins or higher. The AFC East plays the NFC South, with every team lined at 7.5 wins or higher. They face the AFC West, with every team lined at 7.5 wins or higher. This is a brutal schedule, plain and simple.

Nick Saban comes to Miami with an impressive coaching resume as a college head coach and an NFL assistant. Steve Spurrier came to the NFL with an impressive resume. So did Butch Davis, Dennis Erickson and Dave Wannstedt. College coaches have a horrible track record at the next level over the past ten years – there hasn’t been a single success story since Jimmy Johnson led the Cowboys to a pair of Super Bowl titles in the early 90’s. Worth nothing, Johnson failed miserably during his tenure right here in Miami…..

The Dolphins hav one of the weakest offensive lines in football. Their quarterbacks, Gus Frerrote and AJ Feeley have been unable to secure the starting job, each playing as poorly as the other. Neither has time to throw the football, or an effective running game to take the pressure off them. One of my favorite quotes from training camp came from Nick Saban’s mouth, regarding his QB situation. “It has seemed the entire preseason, whichever quarterback played second has played best. It's something that we need to continue to evaluate.” Gee, really Nick?!? You mean the QB that has been playing against the second string defense has done better than the QB that has been playing against the first string defense? Wow, what a surprise. Both QB’s will be playing against first string defenses in the regular season. Neither has demonstrated the ability to be the least bit effective against quality defenders. And with Saban seriously considering a QB rotation, this is a bad situation that is likely to get worse before it gets better.

This defense has lost Patrick Surtain, Sammy Knight, Brian Robinson, Arturo Freeman, Morlon Greenwood and Adewale Ogunleye since last year at this time. Saban brought in a host of mediocre veterans to shore up a weak unit, and we all know how much effort mediocre veterans give on bad teams – not much! Junior Seau and Sam Madison are well past their prime, as are Vonnie Holiday and Kevin Carter. With new schemes on both sides of the football, a hard nosed head coach not known for his outstanding communications skills, a declining talent base and a tough schedule, the Dolphins Under 6 wins is the single best bet on the board for the 2005 season.
